You're joking, right? Or are you really that naive?

Foolish for them to do this. They're assuming people dont comparison shop. With this little 'trick' they'd always be more expensive than, say, buy.com. Unless what they're doing is pricing themselves over for people who use coupons a lot, figuring they dont want a bargain shoppers business anyhow...hmm...

Thanks sanvara, I guess I'll start clearing cookies and checking the prices.

this would explain why every time someone posts an amazon deal i never see the same price as they are saying it is, always $10 or $20 higher

has anyone BESIDES sanvara been able to confirm or replicate this?

Looks like no, looks like all Sanvara's posts have been in this thread.

Amazon is known to change prices all the time. I've bought many things where the next day the price changes. Thier prices fluctuate. For example, I purchased a DC games a year ago. It was 19.99 at Amazon. It was cheap so I bought it. Next day it was 34.99. Another time I was looking at a SMC Barricade Router. It was on the movers and shakers. It dropped to 161.99. I debated buying it and the next day it went up. It can be that sanvara was checking the card and during his logging in and out, Amazon was updating prices. We all know Amazon has had a history of this in the past few years or so.

To clear your cookies, go to TOOLS/INTERNET OPTIONS/SETTINGS/VIEW FILES

I found in XP, there are actually 2 cookies for amazon, in the temp internet folder and the cookies folder.

Yep, when I followed Insomniac's link it was $103. Refreshed three times and it showed $75. Refresh again, $103. Every third refresh gets it to $75! Bizarre!!

geez, I really wish you guys weren't so quick to think the worst of people. Yeah, sanvara must be a liar because these are his first posts. What's wrong with you guys? Its a great way to discourage people from posting things, like this, which I happen to think is rather important.

And for your information, yes, I checked this morning and the Orinoco card does the same thing for me. $103.99 when I check it regularly, $75.99 anonymously.

Notice how when a deal goes wrong or a rebate is invalid those that lurk start to post. Granted sanvara may have not known that Amazon has done this before, it is not a hot deal though.

Yeah I tried that and it happened for me as well. Maybe it could be a database error? Oh well, just make sure you refresh lot of times before buying.

Interesting. $70 shipped is a pretty good price even. At first it was $104, I searched the temporary internet files folder for "amazon" and deleted the cookie Cookie:worms@amazon.com/ and one other. Went back and got the $75 price. Went almost all the way through checkout (logged in and all) with no problems and then cancelled.

Now $104 is all I get, logged in or not, Amazon cookies or not. I haven't tried any blanket cookie clearing cause that's a big PITA. Good thing I don't need one right now but I'll be sure to try this technique on future purchases.

As a side effect of the cookie clearing process I finally got my first gold box! Woo hoo! I've been wanting one of these for 6 months but was banned for some reason. It was loaded with great deals like $2 off a $150 DVD player and $3 off some kind of ocean sounds diskman for infants. Cool!

Heads up because if you aren't careful you could be paying more than you should at Amazon. This is so screwed up. I had heard rumors that Amazon gives different people different prices based on buying history and it slapped me in the face today. A $28 difference in price on the same damn item!

On one account I got this price:

Orinoco Gold 802.11b Wireless PC Card
Our Price: $75.99 ASIN: B00006BA7X

On a second account I got this price:

Orinoco Gold 802.11b Wireless PC Card
Our Price: $103.99 ASIN: B00006BA7X

On the first account I had not made a purchase yet. The second account I had made lots of purchases with coupons. I tested in on a few more accounts and the accounts I have with a buying history of using coupons got the $103 price and when I opened a new account just now to see what would happen I got the $75 price again just like I had on the account without a buying history.

So do your homework before you buy anything at Amazon again.

I thought this was illegal. Charging different people different prices...

Son of a B---h!:disgust:

After I said all those nice things about Amazon.

Sure enough, cleared cookies, went to Orinoco Gold web page, $103.99, reloaded 3 times and bang! $75.99. Put into cart, changed to $103.99. Initiated checkout, dropped back to $75.99.

Geez, does this mean it it possible to get gold box crap even cheaper???

Like I need a turkey fryer at any price.

Large Websites use server farms and multiple replicated databases. This very well could be an issue with data not being updated on one of the servers and people are connecting to different servers when they refresh(usually single servers maintain a user once they have established a session). But, who knows....it is always possible that they use "SMART" ;-) algorithms to determine what they should charge a customer.

Finally! $75.99 and it doesn't change. I tried looking at a few other things (electronics, dvds) to see if I could find any other 'discounts'. No luck.
