(mods please don't lock)

My WD 60gb started clicking just now as I was unraring a large file. It sounds really bad, like it's doing major damage. I did a quick search on google groups and WD's support site. TONS of people report clicking noises just before their drives crap out! After a few weeks or a few months. Some people report replacement drives dying sooner than the first ones.

I already sent in my UPC so I don't think I can exchange at BB, but I'll probably try BB first, then RMA with WD.

This could be a major suck.

I learned my lesson on Western Digital drives well over 10 years ago, when my WD 20MB drive died after a very short lifespan...I have a very astute friend that has been a dealer for well over 20 years and he tells me that WDs are no better now than they were then...worst brand among the 'big' names. I always go with Maxtors; been using them for 10 years with no regrets.

The post belongs in Brag and Moan, as you know...and will be locked anyway.

strong and kicking doing rippin and copyin to and from.

as for always going maxtor.. what if they ran into some problem like ibm has w/ their 75gxp? as i recall.. maxtor wasn't all that great a bit back...

not saying WD is GREAT, but their latest line seems to be decent.

You bought a WD. Of course you are going to have a problem with it. Kind of like buying a Yugo and being surprised when something quits working.

<< What, exactly, am I supposed to do with your warning?

Pray for your hard drive?
>>

Pray that you didn't buy one last weekend, since this seems to be an overly common problem.

If you do have one, don't put any important data on it, and make sure you have a backup somewhere. This is a warning that if you hear any clicking sounds, you better start backing up ASAP.

Ehh I think its a rare occurance.. I have several WDs in my house... I have 2 30Gig 7200RPM, and 2 80Gig 7200RPM drive they work great! No problems at all now the IBM 75GXP line now there is a problem, had to RMA my 45Gig 75GXP 3 times, until IBM finally upgraded the drive to a higher model because it was ridiculous.

ur PS can have effect on ur hd, if u have a weak ps, sudden loss of power can screw up ur drive
that's what happened to me and 2 hds (1 9gb samsung and 1 30gb maxtor[quantum])

so now i have a 400w ps and everything is working fine.

I am using a WD 40 gig 7200 right now. It has been a great drive. For the record, I have RMA'd about the same amount of maxtors and WD's. There is no such thing as a perfect drive. All of the companys have a % of bad drives.

You have to admit that the IBM 75GXP has an EXTREAMLY high rate of failure... due to glass platter technology being perfected. I'm sure you heard about the lawsuit, as well as the bad press over at storagereview.com

my WD 30gb 7200rpm HD died about 3 weeks ago! It was the 74.99 one from BB! It started making crunching noises and 'hibernate' on its own during odd times under normal usage. Then it kerplunked! And to all WD people, to get an Advanced RMA you have to call them! (It's free, unless you don't return the drive DOH!). I HATE WD!

Which model do you have? Is it the 7200 RPM or the 5400?
My 5400 seems to be running fine, but I haven't stressed it out yet.

But my WD 80GB 7200rpm died a litlle over 30 days I bought from BB.
And I had to mail that back to WD. Still waiting for my freaking Drive now.

btw, My IBM 30GB 75GXP is running fine, and I love IBM.

I've had pretty good experience with Maxtor and WD drives. Never had IBM but I've had a Samsung one and it sux0r! Not only did it fail once or even twice but three freakin times! Samsung is no good!

Excellent. A whole week is pretty impressive for a WD drive :Q

Sorry, guys, but this is really just anecdotal stuff. Hardly the things that true analysis is made of. I have a WD and a Maxtor. The Maxtor is an RMA replacement for a drive that crapped in a month. The WD is original. Both the Maxtor replacement and the WD run flawlessly, and have for a couple of years now. The Maxtor is a lot noiser, though. You definitely know when it's being accessed. Anyway, the point is every now and then someone's going to get a bad drive. They're mechanical devices, which means ultimate failure at some point. I'm amazed they work at all given how they have to operate.

Until someone can show me some actual test facility proof of some major difference between WD and Maxtor, et. al., then I'll be the one believing they're all just about the same.

my WD 60GB from BB has been making really nasty clicking noises as well...my WD 45gig 5400rpm (from the $40 CompUSA deal a year ago) is still kickin, no weird noises or anything...guess this is enough reason to be worried.

I hate thread Police as much as the next guy, but we have one of these threads every 10 days or so.

If you wish to discuss this further please go to off topic and start a thread, or search for an old thread and beat it back to life.

I've had a drive die from every company out there, so there are no good drive companies (*sarcasm*)

Please stop posting and let this thread sink....

I've had problems and have sent back/warrantied Hard drives. All of them have 3 year warranty. And have taken back bad hard drives to Best buys with no problems. You got a bad one. But not worth a Warning like you posted.
