I've owned numerous brands of drives dating back to the old MFM and RLL drives in the mid 80's and Western Digital has been one of the most reliable ever for me. BTW, how was this a hot deal, what a STUPID post! This should have been in the hradware section not here. LOCK IT!

<< You bought a WD. Of course you are going to have a problem with it. Kind of like buying a Yugo and being surprised when something quits working.

Your a moron. Western digital is as reliable as Maxtor or, Ibm. As with anything you buy a $60 hard drive you get a $60 Hard drive. Best BuY probably got these on a special deal from wd for who knows what reason. What next saying we should buy visiontek cards where peoples $99.00 card craps out?

Edit: I hve never rma'd a Wd drive I have rma'd 3 maxtors. It must depend on what day of the week it is made. Never buy the monday or friday hard drives.

my first wd 60 gig 5400 rpm hd, exact mirror of the best buy one, conked out all of a sudden once... no clicking, no nothing... i got all my data back via dos though, copied to another drive and then reformatted this one and have had no problems since.... however... now my ibm 46gig 7200rpm makes clicking noises whenever i unrar files or i try to burn from that drive.... the main reason i bought a hd on the bb deal was to back up the ibm so that i could do a low level format on it and move all the data back

I have 2 of these drives (AND an 80Gb also)

One 60Gb 7200rpm WD in a P3 1GHz...

One 60Gb 7200rpm WD in a 1.2 Thunderbird...

One 80Gb 7200rpm WD in a P4 1.8GHz...

All from great deals on this site. Should I send them back???

heheheheheehe The 80Gb is the oldest...and never a prob with ANY of them...

Just cause you have bad luck with a drive, means you get another. ALL brands have had bad drives.

I have two different Maxtor HDDs, one is 80G and another is 40G. They never have any problem. I also have an 20G IBM which has been used for 2 years, no problem at all. For the 100G WD I have, it still works OK since September. The 60G WD I got last Fri from BB, it seems OK too. But my girl's 20G WD, it failed after 2 months of use. When I say 2 months, it is not really 2 months coz my girls rarely turned on her PC. It just died after 3 months since the PC was purchased from Dell and Dell refused to replace another. They said the warranty is only 3 months. Blah~ I dunno. Maybe my girl got a lemon?!

I agree with the LOCK this post or move to off topic or brag/moan.

As for WD harddrives, all my drives are WD save one IBM.

I had a 5.1 GB drive die after 4 years of use.

I then got UPSs for all my machines.
I now have:
8.4GB WD 3 years old (no problems)
20GB WD 2 years (no problems)
170MB WD at least 5 years (no problems)
3 X 850MB WD at least 3 years (no problems)
30.7 GB WD 1 year (no problems)

All hardware companies have problems every now and then. Think of the number of 60GB WD drives sold this past Friday. It's just the law of averages.

By the way I have had a SCSI Quantum drive fail and a 10GB IBM also.
