I ordered a 40GB IPOD from buy.com.

I received a "shrink wrapped" package that was clearly not the "factory" shrink wrap. The seam was very rough and was down the middle of the box.

Inside, IRISH SPRING SOAP AND NEWSPAPER TO HOLD IT IN PLACE.

The delivery package was not opened.

The worst part of the situation is all the time and effort I have invested. buy.com still hasn't credited my account. Be warned and hope this isn't widespread.

My attorney's are investigating, and of course, I will challenge the charge.

Regards, Mark

The situation is bad enough without all of the hassle I have received from buy.com. They have been anything but helpful, they wouldn't cross-ship a replcecment, they wouldn't issue a call tag pickup, and they HAVE NOT CREDITED MY MONEY. This is just unbelievable to me.

BE WARNED.

This seems like its becoming a common scam, buy expensive electronics, put a stapler in the box, re-shrink wrap it with a hair dryer and send it back. Guy on the local news today said he bought a camcorder from bestbuy and the box was full of batteries. they refunded his extended warranty money but nothing else.

similiar situation happened to my friend at best buy. he bought an 8500dv and while we were in the car driving back, i opened the box only to discover a stinking network card. drove right back to the best buy, and the @sshole of a manager said it was an ATI problem? i had a few choice words for him and his csr cronies who looked lost like sheep. wtf, needless to say, it was one hell of a headache for him. ATI did eventually send him a new card but some scammer out there made like a bandit tho :|

Every return should be taken out of shrink wrap and checked before accepted

If retailers were smart, that would be the policy. I returned a cdrw looong time ago to Fry's, that I had never opened, and they opened it anyways to check the contents. That is smart.

I suppose that's one reason why manufacturers are moving to those infernal all-plastic cases.

Yes, you can find the proper forum here, away from us.

Still, sucks dude. This is why I pay for all my online orders with American Express. While it isn't a cheap credit card their charge dispute services are top-notch; I have never had them back down from a dispute until I gave the say-so. Every time I've either gotten a refund (through the disputee or through AmEx's fraud protection) or a new product.

I'm liking that completely see-through packaging BFG uses more and more. Yes, it's a pain in the ass to get into, but I guess that's part of the goal, the other being that you can actually see what you are getting. I think it's time for manufacturers to start incorporating plastic "windows" into their packaging at the very least.

Just pay with your CC, you morons. You can ALWAYS dispute with them and they will almost always put a lock on the funds.

Harmony Computers, whom I always considered to be a reasonable "safe" bet, just tried to pull a switch on me.

Ordered a JVC 12 Disc Car CD changer that plays CD, RWCD RCD, MP3... received it and opened it and it was the $70 cheaper model that won't play RWCD, RCD, or MP3's.... just CD's.

Got an RMA number and sent it back.... and then nothing. No credit back to the card, no new unit in the mail... so I gave them a call. "Backordered".

So you try to pass off an inferior product, then claim the one I ordered over a month ago is BACK ORDERED... and you can't call me to tell me you're shipping it? So I asked for a credit back to my card and told them to keep the stinking player, and they said they'd ship it the next day. WTF?

I fully expect to get a pile of steaming dog poo wrapped in a FEDEX box.
