If you ever buy anything from a B&M store open the box at the check out isle. If its from an online store... either dispute with your CC or shrinkwrap and RMA?

I had somethng similar happen from buy.com...
Ordered a wireless router and pcmcia card to go with it. What I received in the mail was the pcmcia card and InnoculateIT Software
So I called them and they emailed me a prepaid UPS label and I sent the software back... needless to say, it took a few days to get to them and a few more days for me to get my stuff... all in all, a wasted 2 weeks.... They are not getting my money again unless its a deal I cannot pass....

You guys preume that the retailers really give a $!^^. I cannot tell you how many times I've been in Best Junk or Wal-Mart and have seen beaten up returned items that are obviously missing parts that they've just stuffed back in a box and put back on the shelf. Here's a personal example. I was in ChumpUSA last week looking for a scanner. humpUSA had the HP 5470c on close out for $49. They only had an open box, that they reduced to $44 because it had been previously returned. THe salesman said it had been tested by their techs and it worked fine, but suggested that I buy one of their replacement policies just in case. In fact, he said to "shake the scanner around a bit" when I got tired of it and they'd give me a new one. Anyway, I got home loaded all the software, crawled around on my knees to hook up all the wires, made my first scan, and presto, red, green, and yellow stripes! There's no way they tested it. Had to rip it all apart, repack everything... Like I have time for this! When I went back, I showed them my replacement policy, but they refused to replace it. THey just gave me my money back, and basically said too bad schmuck! Like I said, they don't care if you buy returns that are missing parts or whatever, because when you return it, they can usually just send it back to the manufacturer.

Just make sure that if they dont give you your money or product you report them to the BBB and any local agencies that you can.

This sounds a lot like the story from Germany last month about the person who bought a computer then took it back complaining it was full of potatoes.

There are a few manufactureres that use shrink wrap with their logo printed on it. Seems like a good security measure, except for the fact that nobody at Best Buy would look that closely at a returned item.

How does the soap sound? Irish Spring is costlier, but it is much better than all of the other soaps.

EDIT: Seriously, this is an old scam. I am surprised that any retailer would still be scammed by this one. Most manufactures have went to non-shrink, labled shrink, see through, or full plastic. The better retailers open the packages on return.

I received a "shrink wrapped" package that was clearly not the "factory" shrink wrap. The seam was very rough and was down the middle of the box.

Inside, IRISH SPRING SOAP AND NEWSPAPER TO HOLD IT IN PLACE.

The delivery package was not opened.

The worst part of the situation is all the time and effort I have invested. buy.com still hasn't credited my account. Be warned and hope this isn't widespread.

My attorney's are investigating, and of course, I will challenge the charge.

How is this a HOT DEAL then Mark? I hate to post negs, but this thread has no place in Anandtech. If this thread were in the correct forum (w/ related category, of course) it would be a very helpful. Not here though, not really helpful for users who are excited to find HotDeals. Try posting your thread at resellerratings.com.

Yes, you can find the proper forum here, away from us.

Still, sucks dude. This is why I pay for all my online orders with American Express. While it isn't a cheap credit card their charge dispute services are top-notch; I have never had them back down from a dispute until I gave the say-so. Every time I've either gotten a refund (through the disputee or through AmEx's fraud protection) or a new product.

Yeah, I would never buy anything big w/o AMEX. IMO, its the BEST cc in terms of customer service. So far in the past year, I used it to cover a rental car insurance claim ($90) and a broken TV ($300). Both times, all I had to do was call them up, fill out the neccessary paperwork, and receive the refund. In addition to the consumer protection, AMEX also extends all warranties an extra year beyond the factory warranty! So if it breaks within a year after the warranty runs out, I'm sure AMEX will take care of it.

To the OP:
Instead of getting your lawyer (which'll cost you more money) (which to everyone else he's lying about, but you know that anyway)

Get the fingerprints from the inside of the shrink wrap and have the FBI launch a national investigation. Claim that you felt "terrorized" and suggest that they might have been practicing to see how distribution worked. Suggest the terrorists might RMA a dirty bomb next time.

I remember ordering a pair X-ray glasses in a comic book, when I was kid (smaller kid as opposed to being a big kid now), and waiting months for them to arrive. Imagine the disappointment of a 9 year old not being able to see through the clothes of the HOT 4th grade teacher- Mrs. Pretty. I couldn't even see to set the broken bones of my oldest brother when he fell from a tree trying to rake the leaves...

Oh shut up n00b. This is important to know for people that tend to be too naive.

OP: I'd just dispute the charge. Take pictures of everything and keep copies of your receipt as well as any emails.

This thread is too funny... I bought a paper shredder from Sam's a few months ago for $50, got it home, and opened it-- it didn't work for crap. Took a few minutes, but finally noticed it wasn't the same shredder on the box. The one we bought was a Royal, the one in the box was one of those $10 junkers from the office superstores. Took it back to Sam's within the hour, and they exchanged it for the right one.

Although, considering someone got over on them, we DID have an issue with them wanting to put my personal info on the exchange ticket. Didnt' fight it too hard, they already have all my personal info as a 'member'.

Yes it sucks, yes it happens, and yes it sucks. Hopefully those responsible get what's coming to 'em-- be it karma, judgement day, whatever ya wanna call it-- ain't nothing free.... Unless you have a kickin' coupon code or read about it here on Anandtech.
