If you do not like the idea of buying a defective computer for $4000 plus a $500 warranty that does not cover the defect, stay away from the lastest model of the Power Mac G4 by Apple.

My girlfriend recently purchased one, and she noticed that after she would put the computer to sleep, it would crash from waking up. So she brought it to an authorized Apple dealer to get it fixed (being under a 3 year warranty) and they said that they could not really do anything about it because all of those models were defective. Not only that, but they told her not to spread the word because Apple does not want anyone knowing! And so what solution do they give her after spending $4500 on a system? "Instead of putting it to sleep..leave it on all day" Can you imagine dishing out that much money for equipment that does not even work properly? Mind you that apple is a mulit-million dollar corperation, and when a car company, for example, has a defective car on the market, they take every model back.
Apple's solution? "Shhhh...don't tell anyone" :disgust:

Absolutely.
My friend is hesitant about it and says that they would rather just sell it on ebay and get it for what they paid. But c'mon, that means Apple would be getting away with it, being selfish and irresponisbile for a product they guarentee to work.
Don't worry though, I'll try to talk her into it ;-)

I guess getting a second opinion is out of the question? Have you contacted Apple directly?

I am not defending them, however if this were a widespread problem, we would have heard about it LONG ago. The G4 has been on the market for a while now.

Has she even bothered to contact Apple yet? Seems very very unlikely that there would be a problem like this that Apple would refuse to fix. Wouldn't we have heard about this before figuring that G4s have been out for years now? I'm not calling you a liar but I think there's more to this story than we're getting here. Has she tried another Apple dealer? Could it be that the tech is just giving her a line to get her out of the store?

Recent PM G4? Recent might be 1 or 2 months, G5s have been on sale since August.

Also, I have the last version of the G4 and have no wake from sleep problems, and I know many people that don't have this problem, leading me to believe that not all models were defective. I put my computer to sleep every night and wake it up every morning with no problems. Not to mention, 4000 + 500 Warranty? Applecare only costs 250 dollars for 3 years and even the most expensive G4 powermacs cost 2700 dollars, she must have alot of upgrades for 1300 dollars.

Try macnn.com for help with the problems, lots of users to help you with the problem, just try explaining the problem without saying mac sucks or anything like that, because mac users don't like that.

So much for apple's little "it just works" slogan. Just another reason for me to stay away from apple computers.

This has to be a joke, or either they guy at the PC store pulled that one out of his arse.

Not to defend Apple, but that guy is no Apple Engineer. If this was true, it would of leaked out by one of their manufacturer departments a long time ago.

In other words, don't trust in what everybody says.

Not the first time, there was a mention on Apple's own forums about certain ibooks becoming suicidal bunny rabbits.

Not many PCs (regardless of their price) can go to sleep and come back fully funcitioning either. Sleep is for laptops and is validated for laptop parts only. It is hit or miss if a desktop will work. Search internet forums and this is probably the #1 or #2 most complained about problem (computer clock too fast/too slow is the other top one). So it isn't limited to Apple: it is the video card, hard drives, etc that never wake up.

Look even today someone posted about a PC not waking up from sleep.

Usually a sleep mode not working right is due to some bad drivers or erroneous Firmware. Best guess is that with the next OS-X update the problem will be fixed. On a Mac that is relatively easy to do since there is not that much in 3rd party cards and drivers involved... try fixing a Windows PC that won't wake up from sleep properly - mine doesn't, the NIC drivers act up and so my whole LAN won't work until I reboot.

Solution: just turn it all the way off... this also saves electricity and a few $ per year.

My guess is he/she hasn't even contacted Apple.

Apple WILL replace the computer if the repair shop will not fix it.

It may take a while, but it will be done. It took 6 months for my brand-new G4 to be replaced...but when it did I had a brand-new G5.

this sounds like typical Apple antics: they are pretty famous for erasing all mentions of defects from their own "support forums".

I known people who've had problems with apples before, too.

I've worked at a place that has 100+ apples Power g4's all working together for art students. Half of them would work fine, half of them would go to sleep and never wake up and out of those some would work most of the time. It was kinda random.

Go to sleep problems is SO MINOR. It is, it realy is.

Power managment is something amlost ALL computers have trouble with. It's a pain in the arse.

Power managment crashes XP computers, It crashes Linux computers, It crashes Apple computers. This is because of the hardware, it has very little to do with the software side of things.

Not all Linux/XP/Apple computers crap out, but some do.

In reality do you know what the difference is between letting a computer idle and go into sleep mode? About nothing. maybe 12 watts per hour for a entire month of use.

Plus going into sleep mode parks your harddrive. This wears it out faster.

As long as the monitor goes into sleep mode that's were 95% of your energy savings are going to come from.

I had a freind that had a old g3 Mac (the type that had the crt monitor and computer as one piece). The harddrive crapped out, this was a defect that affected some of the computers of that model.

She sent them in for repairs, and got back a brand new iMac with the LCD display.

So don't be such a freak. I've can show you 50,000+ dollar computers (not PC's) that have irritating glitches about them, so don't think that Apple is screwing you over because of a hibernation problem.

No matter how minor the problem is, if she feels it bothers her then Apple should fixes it under warranty. Especially consides how much she had paid for the PO....sssh......I mean the G4.

One bad experience with a monkey in a retail store, and the whole company sucks? A lot of companies suck, then. Why didn't she ask to talk to someone more competent?

I love how every apple issue on AT immediately deteriorates into "apple blows." Grow up, people.

I never had a problem with Apple when I needed to replace my PowerBook G4, I called Apple, sent it in with a prepaid FedEx Mailer, and about 2 weeks later received a brand new G4 laptop. Sound to me like you went to a bunch of idiots to get it fixed instead of calling Apple and getting it straight with them...they built it, they will fix or replace it, if they don't then you have a problem.

Sounds like another PC fanboy talking out of his arse. Applecare is not $500, and like someone mentioned a $4000 G4 is non-existent. Apple will replace the whole unit if a Authorized repair shop can't fix a faulty machine. Appplecare is great. Often times you can get lucky and get a better machine if you are at the end of the three years. A had cold french fries from McDonald's today. That company sucks, they can't even make french fries. And to think the french fries cost me $10.

Perhaps you've confused this apple problem with a REAL problem with intel's own 875p (D875PBZ) mb that actually happens
