Drug interactions can kill. Let's say that you're taking an opiod for pain and you take Nyquil for a cold so you can sleep. Something in the Nyquil might combine with the opiod, put your brains breathing control to sleep, you stop breathing, then you die.

Yeah normally the pharmacist will talk about that too. You know you're getting the good stuff when the person at the cash says "go to the next till, the pharmacist wants to talk to you".

I've never had a situation where I was on prescription drugs and also had to take stuff for a cold but I can see it being easy to overlook, when you have a cold you just want to throw everything you have at it and try to make it go away. It never works, but you still want to do it. Tylenol, Niquil, Sudafed, advil in an oregano oil sauce is basically my breakfast when I have a cold.

That sounds like a bad idea. Those are both acetaminophen products and you should really aim to stick within the acceptable daily limits on acetaminophen thanks to it's liver toxicity issues.

More lives would be saved If they would include a paper with this information when you buy prescription drugs. They should also tell you to contact your doctor or pharmacist if your taking other prescriptions, OTC drugs or supplements. </sarcasm>

You'd be surprised the number of people that have no clue about that. We'd see several "suicide" attempts from incoming freshmen every year involving Tylenol OD's. Most never knew one could kill their liver by taking 20 Tylenol at once....almost always they'd respond to the question of "Why did you choose Tylenol?" by answering they never knew there was any danger in taking a bunch of Tylenol.

Unfortunately, some learn the hard truth as they pass away from liver failure from a Tylenol OD, which is a particularly painful death.

I grew up in a household without Tylenol, but once I started working, I found out that everyone at work had a bottle or two in their purse/desk. People seemed to be popping the shit like candy. If it's OTC, it must be safe...
