Warp questions

In star trek, When in warp if you fire a photon torpedo. How does the torpedo stay on warp after it leaves your warp field?
I know there are episodes where they fir forward torpedos at warp and they stayed in warp.
So torpedos have there own warp engines?

An object in motion tends to stay in motion. With no resistance the torpedo would continue at the speed in which it left the ship. That speed = Warp + firing speed. So I would say yes they stay at warp, but no they don't have warp engines.

It takes no energy for the torpedo to coast along at warp speed. However, it would be unable to change direction after it left the warp field. The warp field alters the mass of the ship so that it can attain those speeds. Without the field, it becomes infinitly massive and therefore would take infinite energy to change it's intertia.

If that was the case, then a torpedo fired @ warp speed that left the field would be the ultimate weapon. With an infinite mass it would be able to destroy anything on impact :Q

I know a lot of people think that if your a geek you gotta love star trek, but that's not entirely true.

Not quite. It took a good part of the fleet to take out the main deflector generator. Then by chance alone a singe A-Wing crashed into the bridge...

Wasn't the main deflector generator inside the core of the Death Star?

So by rights, it had no effects on the defense system mechanism of the star destroyer.

However, upon leaving the warp field the torpedo would be dragged apart by it's own inertia because it is traveling faster than light.

If I can remember correctly, the only time they ever shot a torpedo at warp was behind them, with another ship or entity traveling behind them at warp. The warp field leaves a bit of a trail for awhile so technically the torpedo was still within it.

Each ship has it's own deflector generator. Remember the large ball outside the star destroyer that the "focused all firepower" on right before the a-wing crashed?

Infinite mass is only relative...
