If you want 4:3 w/bars, the best resolution is 1400x1050, as the bars will be pretty small. I just wish the Gateway was an IPS panel...

Anyone had any luck using the recent (12/9 - 12/12) best buy coupons on these? They don't say monitors, but do say good on TVs... and this would be a great tv.

I picked up the Samsung 930B last night, and it looks great, still tweaking it.

But then I notice today that Circuit City has the Gateway (FPD2185W) on sale for $527.99 before tax. Of course, it's out of stock and not available in stores...

This thread has helped me make my mind up. About 2 weeks ago I bought the viewsonic vx924 without doing a whole lot of research. Of course the lighting is horribly uneven. I was looking into the samsung 214T but the stores in town actually have this monitor and it's probably a good idea to go wide at this point. This should mesh well with a evga 7800GTX-KO right?

This monitor is stunning on my X800XL...I'm sure it would be just as nice on your 7800GTX.

Btw, I'm thinking about adding some DVD pics to this thread soon.

SW EP1 pics are added above.

Even with widescreen I don't think 1680x1050 will be enough for me...could a GeForce 6600 drive two of these?

I just picked mine up. I'm pretty pleased with it. The complaints about colour bands had me worried but I don't really see any problem at all. The brightness is so much more even than my on my 924. And for once it appears I got no dead pixels! I've got a 6600 and it's sorta chugging in cod2. I don't really know how 2 monitors would affect things.

Ok..question. I have been looking into "all in one" monitors for my bedroom. Well..on Black Friday I got a LiteOn LVW-1105GHC dvd recorder.

It has RF in and out, component out, and AV out. Do you think the dvd recorder would put out a basic cable signal through component or AV outputs? Or would only DVD playback work? The wording in the manual is terrible and LiteOn doesnt even list it on their website.

Im trying to avoid returning the LCD. I want to know it will work. So I think I will buy the cables and connect it to the big Wega down stairs with component inputs.

Hello...

I've been drooling over these two monitors for about a month now, but I really don't want the kind of functionality and games performance that most of the people here want. Basically, I'm tired of squinting at the text on my syncmaster 900IFT. I want a nice, widescreen LCD monitor that's going to have crisp-looking text, like the way it appears on my XGA laptop.

Can anyone tell me if there will be much of a difference in how text appears on these two monitors?

Also, what's the minimum I will need for a graphics card? I have noticed ATI AIW 9800 PRO 128 MB has dropped in price quite a bit in my area. Would this work for me?

If anyone has the time to respond, I'd be very grateful

Nevermore-If you are only interested in easy to read text, a high wide screen may not be the best for that. I went from a Planar 19" (1280x1024) to the Dell 24" and the text is much smaller on the Dell, when both are in native resolution. The Planar was much better for simple web brousing and reading of text in general. I know you can increase the size of fonts, but if you do that many web pages end up scrambled. On some sites the pages only fill the middle of the screen and leaves blank spaces on each side which eliminates the benefits of wide screen. My wife is still angry at me for getting rid of the Planar, but I love the sheer size and features of the Dell(even if I have to squint some on text).

Thank you for your response. That's a good point. I should probably just go to a store and look at the Gateway.

When I think about it, however, my Syncmaster is 19" and the res. is 1600x1200. Granted, the text is small, but it's not the size so much as it is the blurriness of the characters. My laptop res is 1400 x 1050 on a 14" LCD, and it's perfect. Wouldn't 1680x1050 on 21" mean the text is a little bit bigger? I could have this completely backwards though...

The reason I thought making the jump from 19" to, say, 20" or 21", was the thought that it would be easier to work on docs side-by-side.

Thanks again for your response.

I don't think reading on these two monitors is a problem. On the contrary, it is quite ergonomic in the way that you can multi-task. I program a lot for my Engineering courses in .NET, VHDL, and Xilinx - I would have never been able to have such an extensive area for reading on a 1280*1024 screen.
Anyway, Nevermore, if you are going to read most of the time and will not run too many multimedia apps, I'd say go for the 2005FPW. It's cheaper and performs similarly to the Gateway panel. Obviously, if you buy the Gateway panel, you'd be able to enjoy more "stuff."

Thank you as well. I easily upsell myself, and had pretty much decided on the Gateway, but the Dell dropped significantly in price this week, so I've got my eye on it again. It was just that worry about the text, as I haven't looked at either of them yet.

If I may ask one more question, I mentioned the ATI AIW 9800 PRO 128 MB in my earlier post. Most people here are talking graphics cards that are way better than this one. Should I be looking at something more powerful?

Thanks again.

I'm now looking at this monitor as the 27" Viewsonic I just bought doesn't cut it. They silently changed the pannel from a 1280x720 to a 1366x768. And now it diesn't properly work with a PC over DVI.

It seems pricy for a 21" ... but on the other hand there doesn't seem to be many complaining about little quality issues.

I think you'll need to download a special driver set for the 9800 PRO from DELL's website. But ATI's newest drivers should be able to take care of the newer WS resolutions.

I've had this monitor a week now & I can still say, without a doubt, I'm so glad I got it. Some of you have asked about the quality of the text. It's bright, crisp & very clear.

Again, I truly loved my 19" Viewsonic PS790 CRT monitor for the 5+ years I've had it...I haven't missed it at all.

I have a difficult time believing anyone would be dissatisfied with the purchase of this monitor.

Took the gateway to a Lan party last weekend.. everyone was all goo-gooing over it

It played very nice and I currently have a progressive scan dvd player and a geforce 4200 on my workstation connected to it. it looks good.

I borrowed the monitor to use with my x800xt aiw for the Lan event.. my only issue.. the ATI card did not work on DVI when hooked up I had to config it some.
