Was Quake 4 any good?

I have actually enjoyed the id games over the years, though they are awfully formulaic. I loved Q2 and D3, though both (particularly the latter) were criticized for being very linear and uninteresting. I don't really mind Q4, but I liked D3 better. I'd love to see the D3 engine used for updates to the Heretic, Kingpin, Soldier of Fortune, and Castle Wolfenstein franchises. For my money (and I know many disagree) the engine looks better than HL2, and plays well too.

On foot it's pretty good, but the vehicles are teh meh. I don't think it's worth full price, Far Cry, HL2, FEAR are more worthy at full price.

I have been trying to play it, but when I hit the play button it asked me to insert disc 1, which I do and hit OK but nothing happens. This happens time after time. I have tried different discs instead of disc 1, but still the same. I have un-installed and re-installed 4 times. The install seemed to go fine. The system I am running is more than enough to run it. All drivers are updated. I am using the Dell 24" monitor. I even set the resolution down to 800 x 600. Any ideas. Totally frustrated at this point.

Sound like you may have the infamous bad install CD #2
[maybe not, but there were many Q4s shipped with this problem . . . usually the install 'hangs' right at the end]

return it to where you bought it and get another Q4 . . . the DVD version doesn't have this problem

at the least contact their tech support
