Thanks for all the nice responses.. This has become pretty dwelling for me, and it really helps to hear that I probably couldn't have done anything.. But it still weighs heavy. No matter what I went through, it is nothing compared to what the old man is going through right now. I can't imagine taking a vaction with my wife (a wife for possibly 50 years) and having it turn out that way.
I do have a little more to the story:
On the train home, we were talking with some other americans tourists and they mentioned that they tried to climb the mountain but they didn't get very far, I told them that we were up there and they asked what time, and when we told them they asked if we were the couple that stayed with them. Apparently the man that ran down the mountain ran into them, told them the story and they (the tourists on the train) ran to call the police. The man that was running down the mountain was right behind this couple.
What happened was is on one of the switch-backs the old lady didn't see that it was switching and kept going straight, and 2 steps off the trail she slipped and fell down the mountain. They were confused and thought that the castle was up this trail, it was so foggy that they never even saw that they walked right past it on the way to the trail. I could never imagine how they made it as far as they had.
I just wish I had closure, I feel for that man. I wish I could have been there 30 mins before. I just don't know how he will be able to handle his loss.
