Was this a mistake?

I bought an Athlon 1.4GHz TB a week before Athlon XP came out. I could have returned my TB and bought an Athlon XP1600+(1.4GHz) with negligible price difference. Should I have done that? Its way too late now ofcourse..

No. I dun think so. U can't wait forever to buy something in computing technology. Eg. You could have still kick urself in the mirror if u bought that XP1600 only to know tht the XP 1700 now carrying almost the same price.

If you were like me you got the 1.4ghz tbird for 98.00 bucks (www.tcwo.com)...then it shot up to 116.00 and it hasn't come down too much...so I am happy...I don't think the xp's overruns me too much at the same mhz...

My chip is unlocked so ocing will be a breeze which the xp's are not necessarily that easy of a step...

I agree with Wind, eventually you just have to bite the bullet. You could always wait for next week to get something cheaper/better but next week never comes in the computing industry.

Video cards are a lot worse. So you didn't lose much anything..

You still have a good CPU. I generally avoided buying top of the line stuff, ever since my $4000 486-DX50 system was made obsolete in a month about 10 years ago. I think the cpu was about $1000 back then. :Q
So don't feel bad. Nowadays the difference between 2nd and 3rd tier stuff is not a lot cheaper. So I broke down this year and got a top-of-the-heap-at-the-time Athlon 1400 system because it was so cheap and it didn't matter if the XPs came out a few weeks later. This is a great time for computing, and it will only get better!
Next year if they come out with some 3 ghz monster you can get the 2+ ghz processor of your dreams for peanuts.

I agree with above...I generally like to buy yhe chips when they fall to 100-150 range. This often means I am not buying the greatest, but I usually get a good deal. I usually jump in 300-400mhz jumps so I am looking in the future at a reasonably priced 1900+ (1.6ghz). Maybe right after the new year it will dip under 150...

With no plan on overclocking, what are the differences between XP1600+ and TB1400 beside the power consumption?

Check our reviews it seems to be an average of 10 percent in performance...

1) hardware prefetching
2) built in sse coding
3) advanced branch prediction
4) less heat (due to less power consumption)
