I'm with Viper here, my first thought was this lady acted out of fear not racism. You people have no idea how this women would of reacted to this situation 3 months ago or how she treated people of Middle Eastern descent before 9/11. Although this women was wrong by most people's definition I don't think anyone here has enough info to cry "Racial Foul". Everyone here is so quick to pull out the race card, get over it people and start analyzing situations without your own built in bias.

BTW, I don't agree with or condone this women's actions and I am sorry that Zblan had to be subjected to her ignorance.

Ha ha. I would have kept my mouth shut. If she wants to give me my own row because she thanks I'm a gay, transsexual, goat-raper...then let her.

There's nothing cooler than having your own row.

i see MTV has trained a lot of people to think "racism" first.

it's real simple: it was "middle eastern" people that hijacked those planes and flew them into WTC killing 5000 people. it wasn't the chinese, or the columbians. she was reacting to that because that is what she understands.

if you thought she was wrong you should have just sat her down and talked to her about her fears. you could have shown her she had nothing to fear.

I see it as fear brought on by insecurity and prejudicial attitude in light of recent events. If she had asked the flight attendant to move you to another seat or off the plane, then that would have been more on the lines of an act of racism. IMHO

I don't watch MTV, but I do think it was rude, no matter the reasons. If you don't want to sit beside someone you can at least be discreet.

I was happy that I got a whole row to myself, and I never called her a racist but I felt hurt that she wouldnt even sit next to me on the plane, kind of made me feel like the kid on the bus that no one wants to sit next.

ahhh good ol' ignorance. not sure what she did was racist...more like prejudged. i wonder what would have happend had you told her your name was Oliver or Sam or something. Had I been sitting nearby there would have been a scene. i tend to get emotional. theres not a whole lot you can do about it now....not even sure you could have changed her mind anyway.

if you woulda taken out a phone and started speaking arabic into it she probably would have lost her waste management skills which might have been worth a laugh but wouldn't have helped the situation.

People as a whole are piss-ignorant followers who live in their own little world, and dont think much before doing things.
I wouldnt worry too much about it, your not the first to be racially discriminated against and wont be the last.

First off, I'd like to dispel the idea that the woman was "ignorant", a word used to describe her at least 6 times in here. It sounds to me she knew EXACTLY what she wanted and knew exactly how to get what she wanted quickly and with little fanfare. That doesn't sound anything like ignorance to me.

Racial profiling, such as this lady's action, is not a product of ignorance. It is a product of identifying a disturbing trend. When planes are crashed into buildings, when people are taken hostage, and when buildings are blown up, the perpetrators are almost always of middle eastern descent, with middle eastern sounding names.

I disagree strenuously that the lady was ignorant, whether or not she was a racist or just afraid.

Maetryx, I would call her ignorant also. She knew exactly what she wanted, as you say. She was thus aware based on information, but she was still ignorant in so far as not having the intellectual equipment to understand the irrationality of her fear or the inappropriateness of her response.

The question this raises for me is how to live in a world full of fools. There is always the temptation to take revenge on them, and it's so easy to do. But to do so only adds to the cumulative sh!t that's going around. The question is, how do we get to a place where we don't need to show fools that they are fools out of a desire for revenge for the suffering they or somebody just like them caused us.

Yes, I agree that this was bigotry based on fear.

But it worked out better for you. I can't remember the last time I got three seats to myself. It's happened, but it has to be at least eight years ago...

I think I'll try this on my next flight

The person may not be racist on a regular basis, but this was a racist action based on fear and misunderstanding. I would have muttered racist under my breath while she was walking away. If anything others would have heard it. She handled it in a somewhat decent manner, by requesting she move instead of saying something really stupid like requesting you move. But then again, the best possible resolve would have been for her to deal with her fear. The second best resolve would have been for her to move without you knowing the reason.

I've never flown, but from the sounds of it, looks like you got the better deal with 3 seats to yourself? Don't waste time thinking about what she did, she probably can't parallel park either.

Calling her action racist is extreme. She was rude, but not racist.

Why is it that when someone is rude to someone of a different race or culture, some people are so quick to scream racist out of their very own ignorance. Who are you to say she wouldn't do something like this to someone else of her own race/culture.

While she was being "too open" about the way she felt, maybe one of her family members or friends died in the WTC act of terror. As some people have already mentioned, in light of recent events there is a flip side to your sad story.

The fact that you've chosen to post this tells me this is bothering you, which means you are betraying your own insecurity by being so race conscious.

You should have peeded (urinated) on her before she left ......... that way she would REALLY have a reason to go. :disgust:
