I prefer the arrows.
The area is less crowded and I still have enough buttons at my fingertips (I can reach half the keyboard and the numpad).

When I use WASD, my pinky rests on the left shift key for jumping. When I move my hand to ESDF, my pinky feels like it is stretching to reach that shift key and no longer feels as comfortable. That is the main reason ESDF loses.

Arrows for movement, CTRL for crouch, Shift for walk, End for drop weapon, Delete for reload (exactly why I won't ever use another type of keyboard, because I'm so damn used to mine).

MS Natural Keyboard Elite (the one with the small arrow keys).

I used to use ESDF, but got annoyed with having to reconfigure my keys for every game, and became a pain in the ass, so I just settled for WSAD.

i used to be strictly arrows, but after switching to wasd i found it more comfortable, my hands were farther apart. ESDF loses because the shift caps and tab key are no longer comfortable for my pinky.

To those who say "ESDF just doesn't feel right"...hwo can it not feel right? Those are where your fingers are supposed to be when you do regular typing. So how can it not feel right? It should feel really natural.

I use ESDF for Serious Sam, QIII, UT..etc..most FPSs, I guess..but in BF1942, I use WASD.

Put your middle finger on W, index on D, ring on A, pinky on Left Shift, and thumb on SpaceBar. Hold it there for a couple seconds. Now move your pinky to Left CTRL and hold it there. It should feel a little awkward, but nothing major (your hand should be tilted a little). Now do the same test with ESDF. I find that with ESDF my hand is already tilted when my pinky goes to hit Left Shift and is even MORE tilted when I try to hit Left CTRL, to the point where I've got to shift my hand to a different angle or my thumb feels cramped on the spacebar.

Now, you could move all your keys over, such that jump = Z , etc. But then you actually lose more keys than you gain. Because you lose Left Shift and Left CTRL and only gain Z.

You also gain Q and A..not just Z.

I used to use the arrow keys but found the light of WASD. I could imagine ESDF is doable, but the point of remapping the keys for every game is a good one.

Relative to distance, Gain Q, Lose Tab. Gain A, Lose Capslock. Granted, you could bind Tab/Caps to "less used functions", I'm not really seeing much of a gain there.
