Just bought my first house and I need to pick up a washer and dryer. Looking for type/brand/model recommendations. Front loading is attractive, but they are must more expensive. Recommendations of places/ways to get a good deal are also welcome.

We've got the LG TROMM washer/dryer front loader set (the bright red ones). Have had them for a year and absolutely LOVE them...went to Home Depot and saw them on sale. Then went to Best Buy and got them to price match minus a few percent...got a great deal...$1800 total which included a warranty service plan. Also - the 1800 Best Buy reward zone points we got from the purchase came in useful later when we bought a video camera!

The front loading Samsungs are awsome. We just bought a set ($1,800+) after trying the Whirlpool Duet Sport series for a few weeks. The Whirlpool sucked. We had owned a Whirlpool top loading washer/front dryer for 14 years and they were great but I couldn't get the new Whirlpool to stop walking and vibrating badly (even when not in spin cycle), nor could the repairman.

Went with the Samsung and their VRT (Vibration Reduction Technology which uses dual drums and stainless steel balls between the drums to help balance them. If the inner drum is off balance, it forces itself forward and displaces the steel balls which move to the opposite side of the imbalance). Absolutely love them so far (two months) and would highly recommend them over the Whirlpool Duet Sport model.

Good luck!

This week Sears has 15% off all appliances and free delivery if you use your Sears card. Sears, HomeDepot and BestBuy are good sites to get reviews on products.

I have the LG front load washer(3.6 cu ft) and dryer (4.0 cu ft) and really like them. I think I got them combined on sale for around $1200. I currently have them stacked in my 3rd floor bedroom and they are quiet enough to run while sleeping.

When I was researching washer and dryer on these forums, LG Tromm was recommended numerous times.

Fisher & Paykel top loaders were also mentioned as a good brand.

I've been using the Whirlpool Duet for around 3 years and haven't had any issues. Picked them up at Costco.

OP, will this be a first floor or second floor installation? Also, if first floor, is it a concrete slab or wood subfloor?

I would read many, many, many reviews if you're installing on the second floor (as I discovered the hard way).

Read the reviews at sears, amazon, etc... when you get some you might like.

For me and the wife we got the front loader LG set. They have a 4.2cu ft washer so it does a weeks worth of our clothes in 1 load.

The same for the Samsung 4.0cu ft Samsungs. We couldn't believe how much more it would hold than the WhirlPool Duet Sport model (note: Full size Duet (Not Sport) should be about the same as the Samsung).

I just bought a Whirlpool 3.7 cuft front loader washer at Costco B&M for $650. It comes with 2 years warranty. Most washers come with only 1 year warranty. They also have the matching dryer for around $700. Check you local Costco. IMO, if you are in the market for washer definitely get the front loader. It's much more quiet than top loader and it use much less water.

Not to mention that it takes about 40-50% less time and energy to dry as the clothes barely damp coming out of the washing machine.

Side note, while you may OK with the Duet Sport model shown in your link, I can't recommend them. After getting two sets during the two weeks I had them and listening to them walk all over the room and rattle, even when only washing, no spinning, I gave up and called Lowes and traded them out. YMMV to the OP and good luck.

I have it in the garage therefore the noise is a non issue but if it sits inside the house, the noise would have drive me crazy.

Wife and I bought the front loading Whirlpool Duet Sports at Costco together for ~$1400. So far, so good....and you can't beat that return policy.

For washer - Sears super duty top loader, mid-range. Expect to spend ~$400-500.

For dryer - clothes line, folding rack, etc. Low capital investment, no operating cost, folds up when not in use, real quiet.

Yep. They have no belts and the bins ride on magnets. So they use extremely little energy, are super reliable, and do a great job cleaning. Not a hiccup from ours in 4 years. Our Maytag front loader was dead in less time than that.
