Sometimes you just need to know when to shut up. Let's spot the difference.

We get it.

This Pandemic is just 1 step away from being stopped world-wide.... Once everyone gets a mask, it's done. Spreading stops! Fin!

(Let's forget about that whole 6-feet rule though. That need not apply)

I think people don't understand the downstream effects of covid on the healthcare system

Let's say you break your leg tomorrow or start bleeding from you GI tract or have a heart attack. Many areas are so full that you won't be able to get into an ER or be hospitalized where you need to be because the hospital is full of COVID patients. Instead of waiting 30 mins, you may wait 2-3 days. You end up getting suboptimal care and will pay the price. If there is one hospital close to you that can fix what you need fixed and it's full because of COVID, you're going to pay the price with your own medical issues. There was an article published this way earlier year that even at the time of the article when you account for all the direct deaths from covid this year, there were at least 60000 unexpected deaths which probably are the results of downstream effects of what's happening with covid and our healthcare systems.

This is a real emergency people. It's not a joke.
I just now, next week, will finally be going to have a colonoscopy/upper GI/endoscopy done, that should have been done almost a year ago. Who knew we'd be back into shutdown. So far, the Washingtonians have been pretty well behaved, at least on the west side of the Cascades, so the hospitals aren't even close to paralysis here. Friday, I take a COVID test. Hopefully, I won't get a cancellation call between now and then. Hope my "chaperon" does not have something happen between now and then also.

I've been worried for a while that the surge/demand on health care with this Covid wave may end up with more "non-covid" deaths than actual deaths because of what you stated. The gap between expected and realized deaths in Q4 2020 is going to be a scary one.

The science shows that high % of mask compliance (& social distancing) takes the R0 below 1 meaning the pandemic slowly dies out.

https://www.google.com/amp/s/medicalxpress.com/news/2020-06-widespread-facemask-covid-.amp

If a sick person coughs/talks/ breaths into a mask and:
  • The mask captures the virus before it infects someone the chain of infection stops and R0 decreases
  • The mask with social distancing directs the virus away from a healthy person the chain of infection stops and R0 decreases
  • A healthy persons mask captures virus before infecting them the chain of infection stops and R0 decreases.
This is exactly the same as how herd immunity works. The chain of infection stops when the virus reaches a host it can’t infect. If that’s because of a vaccine or a mask. It doesn’t matter.

When the whole population takes it seriously then you can drive the infection so low that you can remove restrictions and just follow up with contact tracing for the few tens of cases that pop up.

We’ve got folks going to Australia and after a 2 week quarantine they can move about the country freely, no masks, with bars and restaurants open. They’ll simply contact trace any residual cases that occur.

We could have had that here but... well you know why.

BUT...MAH FREE-dumb!

I agree that masks by themselves won't kill the virus...but they SHOULD slow the spread, hopefully enough that a viable vaccine can be developed properly...and not rushed to market w/o the proper testing.

Actually if mask usage was high enough it could theoretically end the pandemic.

example. My county has ~ 1200 active cases. If no controls are in place each and we assume each active case infects 2 others, after 2 weeks you’d expect an additional 2400 active cases. 4800 the following two weeks

If everyone wore effective masks appropriately that reduced the risk to a 10% chance of transmission then you’d expect 120 new cases after two weeks, 12 cases after 4 weeks and 1 new case after 6 weeks.

Give everyone a reusable N95 that they actually use and we could be down to single digits across the country by the New Years. It won’t happen of course, but not because the masks don’t work.

Something tells me the majority of Americans are going to be pissed if they try to do another lockdown and it won't go as well as planned....

Not that I care from my working from home executive desk with 3 monitors....

You really don't get it, huh? Exponential increase defies most people's imagination. The number of new cases is doubling every 3 weeks and will continue to do so unless Americans change our ways. 150K today becomes 300K Dec 7, 600K Dec 28 & 1.2M new cases per day at the inauguration. The hospital system will collapse long before we get there leading to a huge increase in the death rate.

I get it chump. It's actually you that doesn't "get it"

It's all well and easy when you work out of a McMansion with direct deposit checks and home delivery of food.

When you can't put food on the table and are about to be evicted.... There are higher priorities in life than a < 0.5% death rate.

I don't disagree with the sentiment, and believe me, a lot of people were pretty shocked, but the summer protests didn't really act as super spreaders. It's just true. The biggest single events from summer to this date are known to be the Sturgis Bike Rally and, well, probably Trump at the White House, every week since he invited his little SCOTUS justice lol.

Whether he ever gets it is beside the point. He's on record as saying he's got his 3 monitor remote work setup at home, so FYGM.

I'm fine with wearing a mask, I just want windscreen wipers/defoggers on my glasses. Is that too much to ask?
Either add a wire to your masks or buy some with a solid wire/metal strip. I sewed a pocket on the top of all mine and put 12 ga solid strand wire in them. No glasses fogging. Also keeps it from moving around.

On the positive side, all the social distancing, masks, and virtual schools will also reduce the spread of the "normal" seasonal sicknesses, which should help with the death rate and hospital capacity. Obviously, we're still fucked but maybe slightly less than we'd be with "do nothing" approach.

If only there was a group of politicians that want to create an effective unemployment payment system to keep people from starving to death.

I ordered some anti-fog spray from Amazon. Might work.

Right - and god forbid that amount be lowered to $400 extra a week so that folks aren't paid more for being unemployed than being actually employed.

Not to mention the fact that no amount of paying individuals unemployment is going to save thousands upon thousands of small businesses that are going to be

But let's make sure not to compromise and instead let people suffer until we take office- --- oh wait, America didn't buy your bullshit and you didn't win the house and senate? Well then, let's just dig our heels in even further! This DEFINITELY will work very well for the American working class and it DEFINITELY won't negatively affect us in the mid-terms and next presidential election.

No... not at all.

Those who don't learn from history are damned to repeat it.

So dishonest. The GOP is content with bailing out Wall St. The rest of gaslit America can take a flying fuck at a rolling donut, as always. This will get really, really bad before it's over, horrifyingly so, because conservatives already bought into the bullshit & still are. What part of new cases doubling every 3 weeks do you fail to comprehend?
