Wasn't Mercedes supposed to be cleaning up their ridiculous naming schemes?

I dislike Mercedes-Benz quite a bit, but was always intrigued by their ludicrous naming patterns with vehicles (CLK, CLS, S55, etc.). I had read somewhere last year that they were supposed to be redesigning several models and bringing the nameplates in line (so instead of CLK, E-Class coupe, or whatever). Did that die? Because I still see new CLK, CLS's, etc. :hmm:

Nothing wrong with Mercedes naming. They are very clearly laid out.

E- Everyday

Right, but when they turn it into a coupe, or put an AMG package on it for instance they dick around with the naming. I have no idea why this pisses me off so much, but it does

Solution is easy:

Only pay attention to the AMG models.

I think they need to drop SL* CL* stuff. Just pick ONE letter.
Otherwise someone says CLS or CLK or SLK, noone knows WTF they are talking about.

Huh? The CLS is iconic for being the fugly ass drooping butt fucker, the CLK is the girlishly coupe, and the SLK is the gay hardtop convertible.

They could not be clearer.

Someone with a Mustang would say that.

I'll take a CL600 over the CL55 anyday. It's classier.

Considering my "Mustang" would be the CL65 AMG version of a Mustang in Mercedes model designations, yeah it would make sense that I would also want the highest performing version of a Mercedes, gadgets and everything else be damned.

Why does adding more performance to the same car make it less classy? If I want a Mustang, it's going to be a Cobra. BMW? Better be an M. Mercedes, better be a AMG. Get it?

People don't buy a Mercedes CL because of the performance, they buy it because it's a complete package of performance, luxury, style, and technology.

A car is not all about performance. More performance does not make it less classy, but the "attitude" of the car does. I like the AMG Mercedes' but I was referring to your comment about you would have to drive an AMG because the performance. You're missing the point of AMG.

People who buy AMGs buy them because of their appreciation of the craftsmanship and quality of the car, not because they can do a peelout and smoke their friends at streetlights like a bunch of teenagers, that's ignorant.

I dunno about you but most AMG owners I know have them for specifically that reason. And I'm not talking about people in their early-20s either.

Wrong. AMG = strictly higher performance. You don't have to buy a AMG if all you want is craftsmanship and luxury. You buy the AMG version if you want the same car with a bigger engine, bigger brakes, and harsher suspension and want to one up your neighbor.

I disagree, if you were going strictly hi-po, you'd buy other cars in that price range.

I actually like the Merc naming convention because it's easy to figure out what you're dealing with, fairly specifically, by looking at the badge. I have traditionally felt the same way about BMW, though in the last couple of years they've needlessly complicated the names of some of their cars with the "xDrive" appellation and the goofy naming of the Z4s ("Z4 sDrive35i"? Really?).

If you wanted Mercedes first and foremost, then you do want badge, gizmos, and comfort... AMG is when you want performance on top of that.

Meaning AMG is not for performance first customers.

see that's what I mean, I don't get why they don't just have a standard naming scheme like BMW or Audi...it just baffles me
