Played for the first time when it unlocked yesterday. So far I like the game a lot.
Any specific questions?

I guess my biggest question would be does it feel similar to Fallout 1 / 2?

Decisions to make where you don't see the effects until later on leaving you regretting / thinking but not enough to make you load a save from hours ago?

How challenging is the combat? Stupidity punished with swift death or more forgiving?

Is the Rookie option really rookie? I don't play games for a challenge anymore, more for the story and I'm a sucker for something classic RPG.

It feels like Fallout 2 with a big party. Combat is very reminiscent except that most things can move much farther and there are a couple more tactical options. Unfortunately, enemies don't usually drop the weapons they are using. I am playing on Rookie for a bit, just until I get the gist of what skills do and what might work for a party since I didn't play early access, and it was very easy in the first two hours. I would highly recommend starting with at least one person with level 2 blunt to avoid running out of ammo early. There are a ton of descriptions and conversation text to read, and the voice acting seems pretty good so far.

Loving this game. It's a little bit fallout tactics / fallout 2.
Wow they sure made general skills important. Just about everything you open is locked broken or trapped.

Wondering how well I am picking combat skills. Melee is pretty important so far lots of enemies bum rushing me ( damn killer rabbits lol ) .

I am playing on normal and feels right. I win most fights without death BUT....I'm constantly wounded and first aid is a premium. It's cool that raising the skill makes more items useable to heal.

I suspect ranger mode would be good challenge.

I wonder how big this thing is. I wandered around wasteland a little ...couple random encounters. I chose to go to the infected plant place first and I've spent a good 4 hours in this place so far...

I'm not sure I have any major cons to the game yet. It's got potential to be even better.

What are the differences between the Steam and GOG versions? Do I have to be logged into Steam's service to play? Whereas with GOG I just have a local executable?

I am not sure about the out dated graphics on this. But the similar setting to Fallout 1 & 2 is appealing. A new game actually not being first person is also refreshing.

Steam is Steam - auto patching, need Steam on to play (unless offline mode is enabled). GOG version is DRM free, take it wherever you want.

As for the graphics, they aren't dated..? It's just the art style of the game. (which is like Fallout1/2, but higher res) .

I don't really agree, judging by the videos the graphics look quite awkward at times, not really able to shake their budget constraints. Graphics aren't all that important to me however, but for as primitive as the graphics are in Fallout 1 and 2, I think they look a lot more cohesive and consistent.

You can just run the executable file even for the steam version...no need to start steam

I'm playing on "seasoned" (which it selected by default) and it's definitely a bit of a challenge. I can see "rookie" being easier.

One thing I'm noticing about this game is that you REALLY have to look ahead and plan out encounters before they start, otherwise you're just caught in the open in a huddle without any cover, and most of the enemies can move into point-blank/flank on their first move.

The primary differences are Steam is DRM, you can only play through the steam client, although all of the game files are stored locally. Gog gives you a local install with no DRM whatsoever.

For the moment Steam is the only option that will auto-patch, but Gog is working on its own client (sans the DRM) to do the same in the near future.

Do note, this game hammers the CPU. The 4770 I have hits around 3.8GHz across all cores consistently, even just walking around. Butter smooth though.

Interesting. I noticed that it pegs my GPU at 100%, but I'm running max settings on a GTX480. Only thing I'm noticing is it's getting pretty warm

Really? I'm running an old 2009 AMD Phenom II X3 710 (with unlocked 4th core) and I haven't noticed anything, also on max settings. Then again I haven't really looked. But if my hardware can handle it I'm surprised yours is maxed out.

I have just got an email on Sunday saying my Ranger edition has been despatched so I should be playing the game in the next few days.

Any tips or skills that are important for first time player?....I have never played beta so going in at the deep end as they say.

Ranger edition?

I am trying to hold out for the boxed edition, but I will have to wait until the 30th.

There may be one of those glitches other games have had where it tries to render the menus at 1,000 FPS or something. My GTX 680 fan ramps way up playing this at 16x10.

My 7970 is taxed harder and the fan runs louder than I've ever experienced while playing this at 2560x1600. I've ratcheted it down to 1600x1200 just to give the GPU a break. Hopefully it is just a bug that can be fixed and not something inherent in the engine.

Either way, it doesn't negatively impact the fun I'm having with this game. I thought the pace I was moving forward at would be a downer, but I'm having a blast painstakingly going over my characters. Modding their weapons when I can, and carefully moving forward in the world.

Really enjoying the old school flavor of this game. Have about 30 hours in the game so far.

Here are some comments in regard to difficulty levels (there are 4 levels, i will call them easy, normal, hard, insane):
Easy: this is pretty much story mode, very easy.
Normal: In the first map you have the option to recruit a higher level NPC (level 8?), and will help with combat quite a bit. I found normal to be a cake walk with the NPC recruited. Without the NPC, it was a little more challenging, but still not hard enough, so i restarted on hard below.
Hard: Without the NPC, i was getting destroyed at the Ag Center as a first time player, so I restarted with the NPC. (I think its more fun with the NPC, as it adds some commentary here and there on missions). The first missions were challenging with the NPC, but not frustrating.
Insane: Did not try it, as hard was hard enough for me...

Some other random tips:
1) Character build: Try to get enough APs for 2 shots based on your weapon choice. Starter SMG, assault, pistol i think are 4 AP, shotgun, blunt is 5, blade is 3, sniper rifle is 6, hvy weapon i think is 6... (12 ap as a starter is tough, so you might want to go for 10 APs and have a second fast weapon skill.)
2) Intellgence is important for skill points, check the explanation text for how many extra SPs you get per level. There are tons of safes, traps, locks, etc so you will need those skillpoints. Make sure your starter team has at least 1 point (get 2 in each ASAP) in safes, locks, traps, computer sci, perception, field medic. Alarms, toaster, etc can come later. Note you get an NPC early with decent surgeon skill, and comp sci.
3) Watch out for the spore contamination disease - dont let it count down all the way (there are ways to cure this temporarily). If it progresses, and you get the Acute contamination which i found was not curable at all.
