Update: Combat Trailer has been released. Release date is September 19!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9-hPDdLMuN0

Game's opening scene released: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xOQFN6U0hSI

I'm not participating in the beta, but what Brian Fargo said in this talk about personal choice in the game sounds amazing. Apparently they have over 500,000 words of dialog, and I love his take on endings ("We have 30 hour endings, 40 hour endings, and 60 hour endings). Apparently you can even "win" the game by ignoring the game's plot, rebelling against General Vargas and teaming up with criminal gangs to take over the rangers... and the credits will roll. :awe: There are no scripted "endings" that you're tied into, the game just knows when it's over.

This is what Mass Effect promised it would be, on crack; albeit in a post-Apocalyptic setting. Probably my most anticipated game of the year right here.

See the full presentation/gameplay demo here (speech starts about about 6:00, gameplay at about 24:00)

I predict this game will be quite buggy and have an unintuitive UI. Would love to be proven wrong though. But when you have this much content, it takes a lot of time to do a quality check. And let's face it, it's never on top of the priority list. Very few companies care deeply about their games (Blizzard).

The game was kickstarted and is a passion project of the creator. And InXile has piled on its own money on top of what kickstarter provided. As Brian said in his speech, he really wanted to hit this one out of the park as an example of what crowdfunding an accomplish, and from all appearances he's doing exactly that.

As for bugs, the beta has been going for months and the most recent patch for it was 4 days ago (and it was massive). http://wastelandrpg.tumblr.com/post/86328756056/wasteland-2-early-beta-update-42098-notes

Granted none of this is any guarantee, but they're making all the right moves and all the right noises. In fact I can't recall a wrong one they've made to date. I'm sure there will be some inevitable bugs like there are in all games, but I don't foresee a bug-ridden mess.

When does it release and are they going to still drop the price when it does release as they stated?

P.S. FMV in video games gives me so much nostalgia. lol

Release is set for late August. I haven't heard anything official about the price, but it's pretty much guaranteed to be cheaper than the early access buy-in. Brian talks about how people who backed for $15 will have gotten the "bargain of the century" given the available gameplay, so I'm thinking it'll probably be in the $30 range.

He goes into some detail about the making of the video during the speech. Apparently an equivalent Blizzard-style CG cinematic would have cost them the entirety of what they made off of kickstarter (just about $3 million), so they found some low-budget actors and cold war stock footage, made the whole thing for under 30k. Works just as well IMO, and 1080p live-action will hold up much better than CG as the years go by.

I didn't back this game, but I got it free with backing the new Torment game. I am actually patiently waiting for this one because it does look good and they have been taking their time with it.

The UI is fine, and has gotten better each patch. I've stopped plying the beta only because I want to enjoy as much of full release as possible. Game is looking great though.

It's the opening cinematic that you see when you start a game. You won't be getting any spoilers of consequence by watching it, and the talk doesn't reveal anything of consequence either. Of over 500,000 words of dialog they reveal maybe 200. But your choice either way.

Release is scheduled for late August.

I'm in the beta. Even when I last played it (first or second patch), there were not a whole lot of game-breaking bugs. This game will arrive polished.

Shining star of kickstarter projects in terms of execution.

So this is being developed by a new company, but was founded by Interplay's CEO? So is it mostly by people who worked on Wasteland/Fallout, etc?

Interplay developed Wasteland right and F01?? - but Fo2 was Black Isle? I forgot what happened with them.

Honestly my favorite of all the Fallout games has been Fallout Tactics.

I'm not a huge fan of turn based. Is Wasteland 2 turn based? Either way I'm sure I'll get it. I've considered the early access as I hear it's actually a playable, enjoyable game at this point. But I think I'll wait for the completed version.

Basically Brian Fargo got fed up with corporate shenanigans at a then-giant Interplay and founded his own company in 2002. They've done some minor work since then, kickstarter allowed them to get funding to do a major project (Wasteland 2).

Combat is turn based, XCOM-like. Everything else is real time. Everyone in this thread should really watch the gameplay demo.

I'm not taking more than 5 seconds to look at this game until the official release date. It's not about this game specifically, but I'm tired of being disappointed by developers whose good intentions far exceed their ability to deliver what they claim. I'll stay optimistic but from a distance. Last time I got excited over gameplay demos, the result was Aliens Colonial Marines.

It doesn't matter if John Romero, Sid Meier, John Carmack, John Romero (pre-Daikitana), and Al Lowe Voltroned some super developer, it takes money, time, and luck to hit on all cylinders. Trust me, it's hard for me to say that because right now it's taking everything I have to not write blank checks to Chris Roberts for Star Citizen.

Well keep in mind the Demo is also the Beta, which has been out for months and received universal acclaim from participants. This isn't a closed operation where we know nothing beyond what Brian Fargo tells us.

hopefully you won't think of this as turn based, but as a RPG adventure... which uses turn based combat.
at least thats what W1 was - it wasnt just all combat like FT was.

I am really enjoying the Beta and I have no problem helping to support Brian Fargo, he is a stand up guy.

Way back in 1998 when he was running Interplay I ordered Fallout and M.A.X 2 off their website. They charged my credit card but never delivered the games. I kept calling to get my games but no one did anything about it. So I sent a letter to Brian Fargo explaining the situation and telling him how much I enjoyed their games but their customer service was kind of lacking and no one was willing to help. I put my address and phone number in the letter. Well a few days later I get home from work and I receive a phone call and it's Brian Fargo. I couldn't believe that he actually called me at home, what a shock. He apologized for what happened and shipped those two games out express and also gave me Fallout 2 which had just come out for free.

Oh look, another crappy game that will sell loads off of brand loyalty;
cuz they made the original Fallouts (or did Obsidian? who cares).

I will eagerly wait the threads to come after the game's release that will tell me I'm not a true hardcore RPG fan if I don't like it.

I'm sorry some people on the internet hurt your feelings. Kindly leave the thread and find an adult, they'll know what to do.
