What about mandatory foreign service for a year between high school / college?

Create an international, larger version of the Peace Corps + FEMA = Global Emergency Management Agency.

19-year-olds would be required to learn basic life skills, CPR, etc. to help the poor in countries around the world / those devastated by natural disasters, etc.

I think it's what a lot of spoiled American kids need.

Right. Forcing adults to do things they dont want to do, because you think they need it. How religious of you.

Landslide, here we come.

Just imagine, if fleets of American ships like the USS Mercy came to the rescue within 24-48 hours of any major natural disaster anywhere on the globe with the precision of the US Military. The world would love us! Heck, it would be a great government organization for retired military, high school drop outs, perhaps even the homeless. Then, along side them, 19-year-old "kids" learning about how the real world works outside of suburbia. Helping erect hospital walls in Africa or taking care of an AIDS-infected child or carrying bags of rice in Asia...would make responsible men (and women) out of those spoiled brats in no time.

Yikes.

You just made the list of waaaay out there P&N-ers.

Yes because we can clearly afford a world wide humanitarian aid task force and our current debt is no problem.

Indeed; I think Obama tops 375 EV in 2012 after he flips GA and MO. Maybe a cherry on top if he flips MT, too.

Ya right,
despite your libby delusions, people will not support a candidate that's making them do community service for the "greater good". It's eerily similar to all the mandatory things I had to do as a kid, growing up behind the iron curtain. You'll see push for change of his vision of "change".

How about we make "Change Parades" every November 4 to commemorate the election of our great, benevolent leader? Sheesh

I actually agree with this for urban policy.. Ask any cop if they would want automatic weapons in Bed-Sty.

This will not effect rural areas though. There's no point in aggravating the masses when you can leave them perfectly content with their 'protection'. Liberals have tin foil hats, conservatives have guns.. each about equally effective in protecting yourself from the government.

...and you call yourself an American? Besides this being far-fetched libtopia, forcing people to do participate in what you think is the best use of their time is NOT what this country stands for.

If you want to build houses in Africa, go for it. Do not tell *ME* where or how I should devote my altruism.

Divert funds currently used for welfare into something like this...

I see nothing wrong with it.

I have seen countless kids/teens have their lives changes by such international/humanitarian exposure...only to come back to the USA changed people...more mature, more hope, more thankful, more responsible, and harder working.

All handguns are essentially banned in Chicago and Washington DC, look at the murder rates. Does not work..

The first black president requiring mandatory labor? Oh the ironing....

The American people would be willing to elect Pat Bucahanan after that.....

Then just imagine terrorists blowing up a few thousand of these forced slaves and taking a few hostage while they are doing some humanitarian chore. I can see Obama doing the liberal thing and tucking his tail between his legs and running away. That should be interesting to see.

I have no problem with requiring high school and college students to do community service if they need government assistance for tuition. Nothing wrong with that. But I do have a problem with it if they get nothing for it.

Repeat after me: I am not the property of the government.

It is so depressing to me that the only liberal concept of charity is at the gunpoint of the federal government. Coerced charity is not charity at all - it's simply another form of taxation. "Freedom of choice" doesn't include how my money or time are spent, apparently.

The assault weapons ban only banned mean looking semi automatic rifles. Functonaly not much different than any hunting rifle.

Full auto weapons always have legislation that controls them that was passed in the 1930s.

Yeah, it's been mentioned before. $4000 tax credit per 100 hours per year.

That's my point, banning does not work. It makes sure that only criminals have the guns.

Exactly, and it only further empowers criminals.

I'm fully aware of the 1934 and 1986 National Firearm Acts. The last assault weapons ban reduced national deaths by zero. Typically fully automatic weapons are no more dangerous then the same version of the weapon in semi automatic. If you don't believe me, find a trained shooter.

Another Brady Bill would be just to inspire people, when the lawmakers know full well that they are passing total crap.

So the goal is to get the real assault weapons, from this original ban, back on the streets? That's the party platform in other words? I think they have that in Somalia.

Requiring community service is the dumbest thing I've ever heard. I also seriously doubt that most people can spare 100 hours for community service while in college. Obama is just not in reality on this one. He majored in Political Science so perhaps he thinks all college experiences are like his, but some people major in something that requires hard work where the loss of 100 hours is a serious issue.

2012 is going to be extremely tough for the GOP. Obama will start with his already impressive Electoral College win in 2008, a campaign machine that was light years ahead of McCain and will only get stronger with 4 years at the top, and the GOP won't be able to use Wright, Ayers or Khalidi again.

The GOP doesn't win campaigns when they're reduced to talking about the issues.
