They actually aren't. That's the point. Ever seen a large-scale marine propulsion plant?

Those "cathedral" Diesel engines are light weights compared to the old boilers.

(They are impressive, when you realize a valve on those huge engines are larger than the pistons in my car)

That's certainly true. But there are other trade offs, I suppose, such as bunker oil being denser and heavier than coal. Also, as a general rule ships have a lot of equipment in engineering that wasn't needed in the steamer days. Air conditioning, refrigeration, lots more generating capacity, etc. Those cruise ships also carry an ass-ton of fresh water, as well as osmosis plants in many cases to manufacture their own. So that's more weight typically located down low in the hull.

Sounds like a steaming pile of BS. We all saw the dolly that was crushed. Isolated incident or bound to happen? Looks like bound to happen if this was their launch approach.

But Northern Marine has launched more than 35 vessels! Just think how well airline and automotive statistics would look if they had that kind of track record.....

No argument about the equipment disparity in modern day cruise ships (air conditioning, greater electrical generation capabilities etc...) vs older vessels.

I'm wondering if the #6/Bunker C fuel oil would weight more than an equivalent mass of coal. My first reaction is that a solid fuel will be more dense than liquid and thus weigh more. Do we have any idea on how much bunker fuel oil these ships take on? At 15 degrees C, #6 oil weighs 996,6 kg/m3 or 3,77 kg/gallon (based on googling)

I've held individual lumps of hard coal and it seemed pretty light to me. Definitely not in the mass category of most rock, for example, but no, I don't really know how the two compare, and it would hinge on what is "equivalent" mass. In general ships have a limited amount of space to store fuel, so I would go as far as suggesting that a given volume of bunker oils weighs a lot more than the same volume of coal.

You make a good point. In my opinion this was bad management, if you have a bunch of employees standing around and doing nothing I always blame the manager. In my opinion there must be a deep problem in Northern Marine management when they allowed things to slip this low. Americans just have no pride in workmanship anymore. This never would have happened 40 years ago.

do all luxury yachts stay in the water indefinitely after initial launch? I can't imagine the owners would ever have the capacity to launch it themselves.
