LMFAO at this review.
PC/PS2 OWNERS DON'T KNOW WHAT THEY ARE MISSING
If all you think this product is would be a MP3 player for your PS2 you have got it all wrong. GSMP transfers your Divx as well as lots of other formats over to your PS2 with ZERO quality loss unlike tv outs on graphics cards. While playing a movie on GSMP it only draws a 1-2% of your CPU power so it is unnoticable on your PC.No more seating in front of your PC monitor to watch a movie while you could lay on a couch in your TV room with GSMP while your wife uses the PC to look for ways to spend your money on the internet, lol. It just plain sucks to have to share one PC for web browsing, listening to music and watching movies if you have more then one person that uses that PC. You can never watch a movie and browse the internet at the sametime on your PC but GSMP ends that problem. All the functions of GSMP are done on the PS2 side which is great, so you never have to go back and forth from your PC to your TV to change a movie or song like you do with TV outs on graphics cards.

This is an eye-opener for me... thanks for bringing it up.

I sold my xbox a while ago, and am missing it now... Can anyone tell me if it's better to go with XBox or PS2 if the criteria is to be able to use it to watch different kinds of video formats, streaming (wirelessly???) video, etc?

Is there any product that can let you stream video / etc wirelessly to something like a PS2 or the new Lite-On divx dvd player?

dunno man, but according to the reviews of the people on ebworld (if you trust them), it is better than the xobx. As for wireless, i don't know why it wouldn't work. Check the gameshark site or look in their faq or something.

Here is more info:

http://www.broadq.com/qcast2.htm

It's a product formerly called qcast, made by broadq. It's been out over a year now.

Aha, i had heard of qcast. Didn't know this was based on it.

I have both XBOX and PS2.

If you dont mind mod chipping, then XBOX is the way to go.

XBMP (xbox media player) plays avis, mpgs, DIVX, XVID, Mp3, bin/cue VCDs and SVCDS form the HD, realplayer, shoutcast, heck, just about any format you can think of. Not to mention modded xboxs make great NES, SNES, MAME, N64, GBA, genesis, etc, etc, etc emulators

xbox-scene has all you need to know.

yeah, i don't think the gameshark supports realplayer, quicktime, or shoutcast. How hard is it to mod a xbox for somone who has never soldered or even opened a xbox before? Also, can the newer xboxes be modded too or is it just the old ones?

/edit: looked at xbox scene. Looks complicated and i will prolly end up destroying the box. Rather just go with gameshark.

Here or Here is where all your xbox needs will be found. Xbox modding, now, doesn't require soldering. Just be glad you weren't on the first wave of modchips. 29 small kynar (sp?) wires x2=a lot of tideous soldering.

There's NO WAY that the PS2 is better for this. Considering you can't even upload the movies/mp3 and other audio/video files to a hdd. XBox= You can take those files anywhere you take your xbox, PS2=MUST be hooked up to your computer. Not to mention all the other files they don't support.

Xbox media player doesn't support realplayer files... I've tried before. Oh and for the ps2, theres a freeware called PS2 Media player.

I had never soldered b4 my xbox. i used the xecutor 2.2 lite. took me about 1.5 hours of actual work (spent a lot of time reading though)

and my xbmp plays realplayer files /shrug

I currently have about 40 divx movies, 40 xbox games, and just about every nes/snes/mame/gba rom available all on my xbox hard drive. I upgraded the HD to a maxtor 120gb

I do own this product for around a year now. When I bought it I was hoping this would be the best thing for my PS2 since sliced bread.

Well, although it does work, if you want to play anything other than mpg (not mpeg2), DIVX, or mp3 then your pretty much out of luck. Forget about asf or quicktime. High bitrate files or large resolutions tend to suck a bit as well.

Currently, I'm working on saving up for an X-Box which I will quickly mod, install a fat HD, and install XBMP.

well, how many movies come out in asf, quicktime, or realplayer format anyways? It would be nice to have the features, but for the average user, i think this is enough. Also, i thought it played mpeg2's...

Which is the way to go if you don't want to do any soldering? (pretty much plug and play and install OS / XBMP?)

How difficult is it to upgrade the HDD on xBox?

For the PS2, since there's no built in HDD, you can probably still hook up an external HDD to the USB ports, right?

Fry's in Austin had GSMP for $30 when I was there last tuesday. They were placed next to the PS2 network adapter. It will completely change your way of watching downloaded movies.

Let me get this straight.

I buy this, get connected to the internet with my PS2 (I will have to buy broandband adapter), let this thing download all the latest codecs off the net and from there I can play mp3's, divx, xvid movies right off of my CDR's?

So I could theoretically watch fan subbed anime (in just .avi form) right on my PS2?

If so, %#^$@%^#$ SWEET!

The xbox is absolutely the best way to go if you want to watch movies and play music.

Modding has become ridiculously easy. If you want to go the simple way, you can use a MegaXkey (Or any usb storage device) and simply hack the dashboard. Edit: The previous link includes instructions for also flashing the onboard bios and requires soldering. There are two methods of hacking the dashboard that require no soldering or opening the box at all. One is the font exploit, the other is the audio file exploit. The font exploit is described in the previous tutorial, here is a link to using the audio exploit.

Another easy way to mod is to use a non-solder modchip like a Chameleon or an Xecuter 2.2 Lite +.

You can flash the bios by either soldering two extremely easy points on the motherboard or do it without any soldering by using conductive grease.

And finally, you can install a solder modchip with some relatively simple soldering. (The best solution. And while not the easiest method, a solder mod for the xbox is a million times simpler than soldering a modchip into a PS2.)

The reason it's much better to mod an xbox is because of the amazing Apps that have sprung up on it. Xbox Media Player is the most amazing application ever created. It plays almost any media in the world, and basically transforms your xbox into a Windows Media Center PC - minus the DVR ability. You can stream radio off the internet, play Divx, Xvid, mp3, ogg, even Real Player, Quicktime and WMV!

There are emulators for Arcade, Game Boy Advance, SNES, Genesis, Nintendo 64, you name it.

And they have even broken the 137gb barrier and you can now install any hard drive up to 2.2TB! I have a PS2 and now 2 xboxes. I never even bothered to mod the PS2 because all you can really use it for is playing games. The xbox basically has become the center of my home theater!

If you have the time to invest, check out the tutorials at Xbox Scene. Everything you ever want to know is in their tutorials and forums.

Good Luck!
