The xbox is absolutely the best way to go if you want to watch movies and play music.
Modding has become ridiculously easy. If you want to go the simple way, you can use a
MegaXkey (Or any usb storage device) and simply
hack the dashboard. Edit: The previous link includes instructions for also flashing the onboard bios and requires soldering. There are two methods of hacking the dashboard that require no soldering or opening the box at all. One is the font exploit, the other is the audio file exploit. The font exploit is described in the previous tutorial, here is a link to using the
audio exploit.
Another easy way to mod is to use a non-solder modchip like a
Chameleon or an
Xecuter 2.2 Lite +.
You can flash the bios by either soldering two extremely easy points on the motherboard or do it without any soldering by using conductive grease.
And finally, you can install a solder modchip with some relatively simple soldering. (The best solution. And while not the easiest method, a solder mod for the xbox is a million times simpler than soldering a modchip into a PS2.)
The reason it's much better to mod an xbox is because of the amazing Apps that have sprung up on it.
Xbox Media Player is the most amazing application ever created. It plays almost any media in the world, and basically transforms your xbox into a Windows Media Center PC - minus the DVR ability. You can stream radio off the internet, play Divx, Xvid, mp3, ogg, even Real Player, Quicktime and WMV!
There are emulators for Arcade, Game Boy Advance, SNES, Genesis, Nintendo 64, you name it.
And they have even broken the 137gb barrier and you can now install any hard drive up to 2.2TB! I have a PS2 and now 2 xboxes. I never even bothered to mod the PS2 because all you can really use it for is playing games. The xbox basically has become the center of my home theater!
