Megaxkey combined with hacking the dashboard requires no soldering or opening the box at all.

Sorry, the tutorials listed above for hacking the dashboard make it sound more complicated then it really needs to be. If you use a USB storage device, you can use the 007 or Mechassault save game exploits to run another exploit without the need to solder, hotswap hard drives or any of the other mentioned methods.

Just check the forums over at xbox-scene. They provide alot more in depth information then the tutorials do.

xbox is the best gaming console out there , hands down.
YES you can mod it without opening it, but that doesnt let you play on LIVE! etc.
mod chips are relatively cheap, as is installation (if u dont do it yourself). PM me if interested.

There is one big problem you guys are forgeting to say about the xbox mods... You'll want to have either a phillips or samsung DVD-rom drive in your xbox to be able to easily flash from normal CDRs... I have the Thomson DVD drive, I had to burn everything to dvdrs to get the drive to read anything...

check this to see which you have... There isn't a single CDR/RW that will work in this pos drive...

Let me get this straight. I buy this, get connected to the internet with my PS2 (I will have to buy broandband adapter), let this thing download all the latest codecs off the net and from there I can play mp3's, divx,xvid movies right off of my CDR's? So I could theoretically watch fan subbed anime (in just .avi form) right on my PS2? If so, %#^$@%^#$ SWEET!

No, it connects to a LAN and runs anything that you download to a computer. So, for example, if you downloaded a movie on your computer, you would use this device and be able to watch it on your tv without encoding or burning a cd. At least thats my understanding of it. Correct me if i am wrong.

This might be a stupid question, but does the xbox play dvd+/-r?

Not sure, but the above people say that the Samsung drive does read them at least. Dunno if you could play them as well.

Apparently, I've been living under a rock for quite some time. I had no idea the X-box had this much potential. Let me ask this, can it output 5.1 AC3 audio on DivX files when modded and is there any added distortion on the video out?

Yes. 5.1 is supported. it's still being worked on atm because xbmp is doing the processing right now and no passthrough. so it could be better.

video. No distortion at all. as a matter of fact XBMP does this....

<!-- 1 - Use Xbox video settings to determing -->
<!-- 2 - NTSC 720x480 @ 4:3 -->
<!-- 3 - NTSC 720x480 @ 16:9 -->
<!-- 4 - PAL 720x576 @ 4:3 -->
<!-- 5 - PAL 720x576 @ 16:9 -->
<!-- 6 - HDTV 1280x720 @ 16:9 -->
<!-- 7 - HDTV 1920x1080 @ 16:9 -->

I use 720p 16:9. on exceptionally recorded dvix movies, it's hard to tell yer not watching a DVD.

at $179 USD, the xbox is like the best thing one can add to their entertainment centers.

here's my xbox page. my xbox page

I currently have about 40 divx movies, 40 xbox games, and just about every nes/snes/mame/gba rom available all on my xbox hard drive. I upgraded the HD to a maxtor 120gb

Heh, exactly my setup Got a preowned xbox with halo off gamestop for $149.99(sold halo for $25), xecutor lite 2.2+ for like $50, $120gb maxtor for $65 and voila the perfect media player....(note the hd upgrade wasnt required because you generallys stream the media from your pc, but in case you want to copy games to your hd, it makes sense). Took me some time to align the solderless chip pins, but other than that, pretty painless install...

B.tw. xecutor lite+ now supports latest xbox versions(1.3).

Wow, this seems kick ass. I've been converting DivX to SVCD so I could watch them on a regular TV for forever. So is there a proposed date when passthrough will be implemented?

Also, the dude I replaced at work left some sort of X-box mod chip programmer or something. It is a really small pcb with a 9v battery and a serial port. Any idea what the hell it is for and if I could use it for something?

not sure on pass through. you can check on their msg board though. just google xbmp. first listing.

I wouldnt mess with that old chip. lite 2.2s are cheap anyway.

I'm in royal oak, so about an hour from ya. if you need some help or want to check mine out on my 57" sony, and yer in the area, lemme know =)

hmm. Seems like i wasn't the only one under a rock.

I have a wireless lan setup at my house. But on my motherboard i also have a non wireless adapter. Will this work with my computer?

To me its seems like as long as you have a way to connect the ps2 to your computer, it will work. I think thats the bottom line.

A friend of mine recommends using a htpc instead of all this. I am gonna look into it.

/edit: here is a good starting point on htpc:

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?s=6a83968e89f39a4a04851d6239cb851f&threadid=31225

Seems to me like thats a full blown out system. So, it would be like this : gameshark, xbmp, then the most elite: htpc.

i had some software that you could burn on a cd with a divx movie or some mp3s in a directory named media and the ps2 would play them. i dont remember what the app was called, but perhaps someone out there does and is willing to share.

Sounds like a Matrix programmer. A Matrix is a non solder pogo-pin modchip for older xboxs (Versions 1.0 and 1.1 only). It could be used to program a Chameleon as well but it's really not necessary anymore since all programming can be done on a CD now.

Maxell CD-RWs burned at 4x or slower work on EVERY XBOX, including Thompson drives. I have used them on dozens of boxes with all different DVD drives, never had a problem. Also Optorite DVD-RW work flawlessly in all drives as well.

wow, can't believe how xbox has evolved to this stage. xbox can turn out to be a great media center machine.

a quick question for the people who has the modded xbox, how long does it take to boot up? like if i want to watch a divx on the dh, how long does it take from the second you turn on the xbox to play the divx on the tv screen?

thanks
