What's the point of any piece of jewelery, as it serves no actual purpose but looking good? Why drive a high-end car when, odds are, you'll never get to top-out, or show off its true potential? Why buy an expensive suit when a cheap one will cover you just as well?

It's not all about how a watch tells time, but the craftsmanship behind it. How much time and effort was put into one piece. It's about appreciating the complexity of something that serves such a simple purpose.

i think your point fails. rolls royce makes horrible cars. expensive, but shoddy. while rolex is nice, there are so many more cheap watches that keep time better.

i don't even own a suit so i can't comment on that one.
i guess though, people have to have something to spend money on, and that keeps them motivated to work, and if thats what they need, more power to them.

i'll just sit here living in ignorance of the appreciation of complexity, debt free and without concern.

Those are watches that rich young kids wear (Beside Seiko. Seiko is what rich junior highschool kids wanna wear.)
If you want to be a one of those pretentious snobs, those watches are fine. If you want the real game, Philip Patek, and Vacheron Constantin.
Except he'd be lucky to find even a used Patek Philippe in decent used condition for under 10K. At retail the "cheap" ones start @ 25K.

If you're going to spend 5K to 10K on a watch find a watch dealer you trust and have him source a used collector's watch that's in great shape. If you keep that watch in great shape it will at least maintain it's value and likely appreciate over the years. That way it will be an investment instead of just a splurge on a status symbol.

My point is simple, really. Some people like watches, some people like cars, some people like shoes, everyone has their thing. Personally, I couldn't justify spending a small fortune on a painting to put on my wall, but I can see the appeal in it.

I'm sure there's something that you're passionate about, a collection of sorts. Everyone seems to collect something, even some of the strangest things.

People who buy these expensive watches pay cash for the purchase. They have large discretionary income.

I recently bought Rolex lady-datejust pearlmaster for my wife as a Christmas present. I know nothing about watches and am happy with my $150 Seiko Black Monster but I know she has been wanting a Rolex watch for awhile. I view it as jewelry for her. I've spent far more on rings, necklaces, and other jewelery for her that serve no other purpose than make her happy. If it makes her happy, that's all it matters.

Yes they do. And unlike most things the watch actually appreciates providing they are taken care of.

I have a friend who has a Jacob & Co watch, a lot of his stuff is waaaaaay too blingy, but my friends is very sweet. It's well out of your price range, he dropped about 140g's on it, but I believe they have a few models that fall into your price range and aren't overly rapper blingy. If I was rich I'd snap up a Jacob & Co Epic II, no idea the price on it but I'm sure it's damn expensive
