I live near a rural community that just happens to have been chosen for filming quite a bit of IronMan3 . I have to say the studio have been a class act from the start. They started off before filming by hosting a event where all the food was free, the producers , directors were giving signatures, handing out swag from the movie and lots of other stuff. I really liked how personable the actors and director was during the event, they didn't try to sell themselves as someone special and really just blended in with the farmers and country folk. This is a town of about 7,000 so really something special for them .

Since that event they have really done a lot of changes on the town. They took the downtown area that was basically empty for years and made their own town, they re-painted everything , even built extra floors on some buildings. It was kind of odd seeing a street that was formerly empty now have a sheriff department, chinese restaurant , bingo places, and more, they went through a lot of work and anyone not knowing what was there before would assume it was always there. The funny thing is the weather is supposed to be snowy and cold in some of the scenes and with the 100 degree heat they have been using huge snow blowers to cover roofs and scenery .

They have also been recruiting a lot of the locals for small spots or background types as well as people with some really nice cars. I started to go to one of the casting calls, but when I saw it only pays roughly $60 a day and that day may be 12 hours, I lost interest. I got some pics I will post when I get a chance to put them on a site that show some of the actors and areas.

I had done vfx in film before but never really watched the actual production, was interesting to watch.

$60 for bragging rights and to be in something that'll last "forever" with the chance of meeting/talking to actors/crew? Who knows - you're little bit part might've turned into something more...

Eh - pretty cool they are filming in your town though!

I agree that $60 isn't a lot for some. I've gathered from this thread and others that you have a more technical background, which means you're probably in that "for some" lot. It isn't a lot more for me either, but I think I'd still love to do it.

Did they ever say how they chose your city? Was it because of the somewhat abandoned area?

even though i would never work a job for $60/day, i would definitely go be an extra for $60 on a saturday or something just to see how everything works and maybe be a part of the movie.

i would probably do it for free in all honesty, so to do it for any type of money would be cool to me.

It is mainly because of the location being close to the main studio lot. They are filming it out of here:

And the town they chose is here:

Play your cards right, and in that $60 day you could end up being a scene stealer, land you an agent and dozens of casting calls and a multi-million dollar blockbuster of your very own.

Or you could just come and post here on ATOT instead and fail at life. Your choice.

I think the big turn off for me was the time required. You could show up at 8am and not have to do anything till 4pm or be told to come back tomorrow and during that time the only benefit is food, because you are not allowed on the sets unless you are part of the scene, so sitting waiting isn't my thing .

There is a facebook page that list a lot of the things they were looking for, look for caged heat references as that is what the code name for the movie was.

Nobody has any free time anymore, even after we've invented ways to speed up everything, from food prep to online shopping, and yet ... still no free time. Sad that its come to this, but I digress ...

Way back in '93 we had the film 'Gettysburg' being filmed only 30 minutes from where I lived, and I worked with dozens of guys on a swing shift that gave us 4 days off, and many of them gladly went to be extras in the scenes on their days off.

Filmed in July, the extras were sprayed with water and dirt to make them look more authentic, but it isn't like anyone NEEDED the spray to sweat in 100% cotton uniforms in July.

Nobody cared about the pay, nobody cared about the food or heat, it was the idea that you could be part of a movie that portrayed the greatest battle ever held on American soil. Even today, those guys still point out where they show up in the scenes throughout the movie (Martin Sheen, Tom Berenger and Jeff Daniels starred in it).

Awesome! They were also filming some stuff near my work. We could only drive by and see all the trucks, and things. Still pretty cool.

In that 12 hours you work for 2 hours and read for the other 10.

what a great movie, although the ridiculous run time is a turn off.

I say do it! Who knows, with your technical background you make get more offers or projects... also not everyone gets to meet A listers let alone work with them in their lifetime!

If given the opportunity to be an extra in a Marvel flick, I'd do it in a heart beat. Hell, I'd take an unpaid vacation day to do it.

I was an extra in a very low budget movie and only made just above minimum wage plus food but it was still worth it just to see how a movie got made. The actors were pretty B-list but still familiar names to a lot of people.

So if I got an opportunity to be in a huge movie like Iron Man, I'd do it for sure - unpaid vacation day is fine for a once in a lifetime opportunity like that. And Tony Stark is HOT.
