Watches??

I'm looking to buy a watch. I haven't worn a watch in a long time so what are some brands I should look into.

if you can up your budget to around $250, there are nice Seikos. watches are good investments IMO. if you take care of them, they can lost for a long time, especially brands like Seiko.

where is the best place to buy the seiko's online? or would I be better off to go to a jewelry store to get it? I would prefer a watch with a smooth flowing dial instead of a tick tick tick one. which ones will give me that.

A Rolex has a sweep hand, but they are a bit out of your budget. Check out Princeton Watches. They have a variety of Seikos for under $200. My favorite in that range is their automatic dive watch with the rubber strap. A metal band takes you over $200.

Generally, a watch with a sweeping hand is an automatic watch. There is no battery, and it works by either winding, storing kenetic energy from the movement of your wrist, or a combination of both.

Watches that tick in discreet intervals are generally quartz watches. They require a battery to keep the quartz vibrating.

An automatic watch usually has hundreds of tiny parts, and it's usually expensive. I don't know of any low end manufacturers that make automatic watches, but that doesnt mean there arent any.

A good example of the premium you pay for an automatic watch; Two watches, identical in all ways save that one is quartz and the other automatic, moderately priced category (Tag Heuer), the automatic watch will be $800-$1500 more than its quartz counterpart.

Check out Chronograph.com for good prices on Seiko and Citizen automatics. IMO they are the best vendor out there for this stuff. Don't be deterred by their location; their prices and service are top-flight. IMO the Seiko SKX779 is the best value out there in an inexpensive divers watch, if you are looking for something sporty - the bracelet is nicer than those on plenty of watches that cost thousands.

I like fossil, you can get a good one with $100. the watch is scratch-proof. i still got a few scratches on mine

I looked at the Fossil's earlier. I didn't like them. Too blocky looking. I want one where the watch blends more evenly with the band instead of a big circle slapped right on a recatangular band.

A quartz-kinetic movement is an electronic quartz movement that is powered by the movement of the wearer, rather than a battery (they actually have a rechargeable battery that is recharged by movement). Their strengths are that they are as accurate as any other quartz watch, and do not require replaceable batteries. On the other hand, they are as lifeless as other quartz watches (this is an intangible, but somehow quartz watches leave me cold), and will stop if you leave them in a drawer for an extended period, like an automatic watch (on the other hand, they have MUCH longer lives, and will run for months on a full charge - an automatic watch is only good for a couple of days at most). The second hand skips like any other quartz watch.

For my part, I strongly prefer mechanical watches (either automatic or handwound). Seiko, Citizen, Invicta, and others make inexpensive automatic watches with reasonably precise Japanese movements (and the second hand sweeps!).

7s26 powered seiko's are GREAT values...


however, the style you like is very "citizen"
I'd recommend a citizen eco-drive

Try to get the one w/ the old bezel, and make sure you get the automatic version.

I used to love the kinetic movements in seiko's... however it took them awhile to get it right. The one that he posted earlier has the newer movement with less problems. The older movements requires a capacitor change every 10 years at the tune of >$100... which makes little to no sense as a battery is much much cheaper.

I agree with going with the Seiko. You can't go wrong with the Kinetic.
