watching people play games.. the ultimate in Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

That's what I think about it as well. I don't mind watching game videos but I don't care to watch someone else play the game. I want to experience the surprises and such for myself.

I only watch "Let's Play" videos when I want to learn more about how to play some strategy games I own such as Distant Worlds, Europa Universalis, or Galactic Civilizations. There are some games where the learning curve is such that these videos become very useful. Games that almost require professional training to play kinda intrigue me.

That said, I'd never watch it for a story based game.

That would be more like a visual strategy guide then wouldn't it? I use those sometimes for stuff I just get stumped on and text based guides don't give me enough detail.

Exactly. Without "Let's Play" videos I would not have gotten as much out of some of the niche strategy titles I've purchased from Matrix Games like War in the Pacific and Command Modern Air Naval Operations. I very rarely need them for more mainstream titles like the Total War games and I definitely don't watch them for RPGs with the rare exception of when I need a bit more convincing whether to buy a particular game or not.

I'm supportive of developers who are supportive of Let's Play content. Nintendo specifically has been annoying because of their rabid DMCA claims. They aren't the only developer that does this but they are one of more notorious.

On that point I can see both sides of the argument. I do think Nintendo specifically is showing that they don't know how to deal with the internet. Their online services are years behind everyone else for example.

They stop in the 15-30min for views. They want as many videos out of their series as possible. Usually they play for a few hours straight and then just cut up the footage.

Exactly, they do shorter videos so that they get more views. Why make a video that is an hour long if you can get 4x the views by making more videos that are shorter of the same exact content. This is northing new. Some of them are really mad and do 50 10 minute videos.

Most of them are targeting video length at what gives them the best profit based on their time invested, people are now making a living from youtube and they're gaming the algorithms on you that decide what is the best content, length is one of the more important factors.

People only started sitting for long periods of time when video games came out. Mozart wrote his symphonies while jogging.

20-30 minute videos are much more digestable than 4+ hour videos... That's why let's plays tend to be short segments.

A few years ago I watched people beat all of the old NES games that I could never finish as a kid, one in particular was Mega Man 1. At this point I don't really think it would be the same, figuring out how to get them to play, and even with an emulator, it's not worth the hassle.

Let's Play works infinitely better for my purposes in smaller chunks. Most of the time I'm just looking for a video of how to get past a specific part of a game I'm working on (like Bloodborne bosses). I'd rather the videos be divided up into shorter chunks with helpful labels for me to search, than click a link for a f-ing Bloodborne marathon video and try to scan to the part I'm interested in...

Lets plays are different than walkthrough or guides. I watch lets plays when I'm interested in the premise of game but not enough to play it. Guides and walkthroughs should be smaller and focused.

I've done one sort of walkthrough that actually had some recurred viewers, and that was the original Crysis. I only played half way through, but it's true when it comes to recurring viewership.

Let's Plays are nice when yes, you don't want to play or don't have the game available to see a certain moment. It's an easy way to experience a game you've played previously too without all the hoops.

I find them rather useful if I'm on the fence about a game. It's one thing to read a review or listen to the comments of someone who really likes it and other to be able to watch what the game play is like.

Some of the people who make them are really off-putting though, either because of their personality or some other reason such as grating voice and non-stop talking.

There are a few that are worth watching all the way through. Several years ago I recall watching one of an old Jurassic Park game that was really hyped but flopped that went into a lot of depth about the games weird mechanics, and other history/information about the game that was really interesting.

Mozart also died at 35, like many people back then. These days it's more likely that we'll live long enough to witness the consequences of sitting too much.

Really, are you going to try and pretend that the kind of inactivity a lot of us gamers partake in is not detrimental to our health?

These days you are more likely to catch a .223 to the back going back to KFC for your fifth bucket of chicken . . . . . . . . :whiste:

The game you are thinking of is Trespasser. Featuring keys for closing your hand, rotating your arm, and other such awkward controls. Kinda like Surgeon Simulator, except your characters life is at stake.

One thing to remember is a lot of these viewers are watching a game they are interested in, but they can't afford/can't be bothered to own a console/pc to properly play it.

That sounds about right. I remember it having a really buggy physics engine as well.
