I handed my disseration to my committee on monday, defend next thursday, and corrections are due by the 18th. Ahhhhh, the joy of a PhD.

For any who have experienced it...is it me or is this whole process simply the most accepted and expected example of hazing anywhere?

Also, if anyone wants some idea of what I am going through look for the Piled High and Deeper (PhD) comic. It scary how true it really is.

edited for spelling

Well, hazing is to put i mildly :Q . I defended my thesis 1989 (jeeeez is that so long ago?) but I still remember some of the less gracious moments as if they had happened two hours ago. Well, there is one thing I remember better - at least the initial part: the party. The latter part of the party - well lets say ... hmmm, [phone call "Hi Joe, what did you say I did during my PhD-party?" "Noooo, o way I did that" "What? Erase that tape now!!!"]
So, where do I find the Piled High and Deeper (PhD) comic?

The comic is written by some former Stanford PhD student. It is...ummm...interesting.

edit: for those of you still considering grad school DO NOT read this comic.

Well, if you mean me, I'm in Ceramic Engineering. My "goal" has been to develop a model to predict corrosion rates of phosphate based glass systems based on their composition. Its been a pain, in part becuase they react different under water as opposed to in a humid atmosphere.

Most window type glasses are silicate based, but phosphates are used as the source for the World's Largest Laser.

Well, I like the Grad Student Motivation Graph too. However ther is also a long term variation - the closer to graduation you get the steeper and more frequent the tops and valleys!

Doctors, Doctors, Doctors ... why I never knew we had so many Doctors.

Q: What advice don't you want to hear from a doctor before an operation?
A: Whatever you do, don't go into the light.

Well, I'll see you all after a while... This may be my last post for a week or two, unless I have internet access somewhere.

Off to college I go!

"Engineering" of some sort... probably of the computer or electrical kind (likely the former, but did any of you end up doing exactly what you thought you'd do at the beginning of your first year?)

Well, I'm off to sleep and then up really freakin early tomorrow :moon:

Crunch on!

Whoa. Look what I stumbled upon!

hello one and all!

good luck @ college proviafan...and no, I think only about 1% of people end up not only majoring but actually WORKING in their intended field of study

now on to another sort of odd question...

Anyone know how I could get a good quality rip of a show that is shown on the good 'ol BBC but not in America

Top Gear to be exact and last weeks episode. If there was some sort of pay per download service I would more than gladly oblidge!! I just am leery of using file-sharing programs...

Does anyone from around these parts have a Tivo'd or captured version? Just curious. I need my fix ever since my friend showed me a few episodes!

Hmmmm ...

Got a new lawn mower ... actually it is one of those commercial units with the two sticks instead of a steering wheel. Very cool. Commercial grade is built a lot differently (robustly) compared with Residential grade ... lots more $$$$$ too.

Last night I mowed the entire back yard in about 30 minutes ... Wooo Hooo ... used to take me about 1-2 hours with the old garden tractor.

For a lawn mower, it makes a very fine tractor ... hauls a garden trailer around better than the Garden Tractor I had.

It has a 18 HP Honda engine and is much, much quieter than the old garden tractor with a 16 HP Koehler.

Of course the feature that made it necessary to purchase this model immediately ... it has a cup holder that will hold a Big Gulp

Wednesday ... I go under the knife ... I am somewhat apprehensive. I am never happy about the prospect.

We should all have good thoughts for Plum Ugly who is not having a good time right now ..
