Water-fuel car

There have been plenty of water fueled cars built as private projects.

Consumer-level water fueled cars are what matters, though. A car that costs $100,000 and looks dumb as crap isn't going to change the world because some people couldn't pay that off with a 40 year loan if they tried.

It's gonna have to be mass-producible on the cheap to do anything.

They are planning to work with some manufacturers so it could possibly be somewhat cheap. I'm sure they wouldn't be that stupid to mass produce a $100,000 geo metro.

I have to question how legit this is and what they are not telling us.

It takes energy to extract Hydrogen from water. If fact it takes more energy to extract than you get back from using it. They have to be using some sort of chemical reaction to extract the hydrogen from the water. So there would be some kind of other material required to drive the reaction that they do not mention. So how often do you have to add said material and how much does it cost?

From another site
"This process is allegedly similar to the mechanism that produces hydrogen by a reaction of metal hydride and water. But compared with the existing method, the new process is expected to produce hydrogen from water for longer time, the company said."

Your link was great.

"With the new process, the cell needs only water and air, eliminating the need for a hydrogen reformer and high-pressure hydrogen tank. Moreover, the MEA requires no special catalysts, and the required amount of rare metals such as platinum is almost the same as that of existing systems, Genepax said."

even better....

"Although the production cost is currently about ¥2,000,000 (US$18,522), it can be reduced to ¥500,000 or lower if Genepax succeeds in mass production. The company believes that its fuel cell system can compete with residential solar cell systems if the cost can be reduced to this level."

Under $5000 for the fuel cell. That's pretty good.

Correct. There's no way to get the hydrogen from water and come out ahead in terms of energy. Sure, you could fill your car with lithium aluminum hydride or sodium borohydride, but getting that material costs a lot of energy. It all has to be paid up somewhere in the cycle.

Yet another hit in google where "water-fuel" cars will now turn up the word scam.

If there was a water car, then water prices would go up. There is no escaping paying for energy/transportation, the powers that be will see to that.

True but this thing can use straight salt water. We have lots and lots of water.

It doesn't run on water. Water is nota fuel, hydrogen is not a fuel. You can store energy in the form of hydrogen and oxygen but you can't get more energy out than you put into cracking it. *WATER FUELED CARS ARE A CLASSIC SCAM*

before this thread gets more out of hand, please don't argue that "this is going to replace the oil companies and we can all drive for free" unless you are a chemical engineer/physisist etc...

Applying that logic to ATOT would leave it empty and cold...

i can't stand that car. it's the same car that top gear rated as the worst car ever. they made it a remote controlled car and then blew it up. the concept of the water fuel cell however, could be damn useful.

I still haven't seen their press release where they proved that they've violated some basic laws of physics. Until I see that, there's no way to get a net energy release from water - unless you then use the hydrogen and oxygen in a nuclear fusion reaction, that is.
And I think Mr. Fusion isn't quite ready for the market yet.
