As you have seen a tankless water heater is not a one stop all. If it were then tank heaters would be gone.

Tankless MIGHT save some money but you have to account for how long you will stay and use it. Current water usage and future usage. And a big one is do you have the current ability to install a tankless. For electric you will probable have top run new wire to handle the new load and gas needs larger exhust piping for the extra fumes.

After looking at that and a new high energy efficent tank heater the tank heater made more sense for all cost taken into account. That and if you get a very high effecient tank heater then warp it with a watertank warp it saves money more quickly then a tankless. At least for me and the numbers i used. Every person and house is different.

I doubt tankless makes financial sense for me, for the reasons set forth above (not really huge energy savings, installation costs). My next water heater will likely be tankless because I live in a tiny house. If I can reclaim a chunk of the closet where my hot water tank resides, my wife would be ecstatic. An ecstatic wife is a good thing.

It takes more time and materials to install a tankless water heater than to replace an existing hot water tank. A lot of places will exaggerate the energy savings to convince you to spend more money "to save money in the long run." They make more money.

Are you sure it is leaking and not just condensation?

Also as a tankless water heater owner, I must say that we did not see any energy savings. Why? because the potential for unlimited hot water means extra long showers. LOL
