Wax + Ear = Earplug...

Don't ask me how, but I somehow got some wax stuck in my ear canal. In an attempt to get it out, I forced it in farther, and now I feel like I'm wearing earplugs (completely muffled on my left side).

What's the best way to get this out - do I need to see a doctor, or is there an "at home" remedy?

Did you try one of those wax removal kits they sell at the store? Some drops you put in that loosens up/dissolves the wax, then it drains out.

All a doctor will do is grab a turkey baster, fill it with warm water, and shoot it in your ear. Another solution (safety is questionable though), is to get a water pick with a very low setting. Then, once your ear is cleaned out, use Q-tips every day after your morning shower.

You can buy ear wax melting solution from walgreens or any pharmacy drugstore.

You can buy eardrops that loosen wax, Debrox is the stuff to get, you can get it at CVS.

Best bet: Use Debrox for a few days in both ears, then go to the doctor and have him clean your ears completely. You'd be amazed at the crap that comes out of your ears. We're talking tootsie-roll size hunks of hair and wax. And you'll be able to hear better afterwards too.

And don't use Q-tips to clean your ears. That's the way most people get too much earwax, the Q-tips just shove earwax further in instead of cleaning it out. Q-Tips and pen caps also happen to be really fantastic ways to puncture ear drums so that you *never* hear again, or start bleeding profusely from your ears.

Remember: Nothing smaller than your elbow should ever go in your ear.

(...my girlfriend's an audiology student, so I hear about this stuff all the time...)

My ex has her own audiology practice, and cringed everytime I mentioned using a pen cap. Although she did remark at how clean and wax free my ears were. Might be attributed to her sticking her tongue in my ears all the time too, but that's a different story.

What superwormy said. I had a load of wax completely clog my left ear so that I was deaf in it. Home debrox kits didn't do any good so I finally gave up and went to the doctor. The nurse just basically gave me a super debrox. Absolutely disgusting amounts of nasty shit came out. And holy shit was everything loud afterwards.

i bought debrox..didn't seem to work immediately, it took a couple doses.
so i went back and bought an ear bulb thing too and used it in the shower and that worked very well.
i had to rinse chunks of ear wax off my torso and face. it was pretty gross, but damn it was nice to get that shit cleared out.

make sure to only use warm water in the ear bulb. i believe nurses will shoot cold water into your ear canal to test if youre in a coma or not. it apparently causes a substantial shock to your system meaning you'll definitely respond if youre not comatose.

Yea I had my ears cleaned out a few years ago. It was unreal the amount of stuff that came out, and I couldn't believe how much better I could hear after.

Do I go to ANY doctor? Is this something insurance would cover?

Insurance usually covers it. Your regular doctor can probably handle it.

You could also go to a ENT (Ear, Nose & Throat) doctor, where the specialize in this sort of thing.

Agreed. I got debrox like 6 months ago, and you wouldn't believe at the amount of crap just fell out. I felt so disoriented after losing so much stuff from my ears, but what can I say? That's how ears work!
