Way to tell if CPU is dead?

A friend wanted me to change his HSF for him on an AMD Thunderbird cpu. It was working fine before, and after I made the switch it started to post and then stopped. I thought maybe it was overheating and was even worried that the CPU may be fried. There was no odor and after taking the HSF off it looked fine. I removed the thermal compound and there is no sign of any damage, I can even read all of the serial numbers just fine. I reapplied the compound and tried it again but now it won't post at all. Anything I should try or does it still sound like the cpu is cooked?

99 out of 100 times it's the mobo that goes...

However, maybe you just knocked something loose. Try reseating EVERYTHING... Power connectors and all.

So this could now be a motherboard problem? I have reseated everything and it powers up with all fans moving but I never get a video signal. Just curious as to what I would I should look into replacing first.

Is that motherboard BIOS set up to shutdown if no fan is detected? Does the new HSF provide speed indication to the Motherboard? Are you using the correct fan connector on the motherboard so it can detect the fan?

If you use the fan from the original HSF.... does that work?

ive seen sometime if the heatsink puts to much pressure on the cpu it will casue it not to boot, also have seen it with some thermal probs between the die and heatsink. Try with the old heatsink and see if it posts, then unless you have another board to try the cpu in hard to say
