Tandy 2000 was my first pc. A pentium 90 mhz compaq frankenputer was my first build.

I'm 27 (not that old right) and grew up pretty poor. My first current gen performance build was the Q8200 OCed and now the FX.

Tandy RL1000 here. I think it had an 8086 CPU and like 512K of RAM. Loved that PC. Before that was a Commodore 64. Had a blast with that too.

People's first "real" build were in the 1Ghz range? Jesus I'm old.

I remember getting a Cyrix 133Mhz and thinking it was an incredible jump from my 66mhz.
Then later I got a Pentium Pro 200Mhz and was cock of the walk
Celeron 350A OC'ed to 400 in a Abit PH6
Then DUAL 350As @400 in a Abit BP6
Then I have no idea where I went from there. Maybe an OC'ed AMD TBird?

8088 here.. you're still just a young pup.

Sure, we had the vic 20 and commodore 64 before that, but those weren't really PCs. I had an 8088, then a 286, 386 sx 33, 486, AMD 586 133, then pentium 166.

Amigas were so far ahead of early intel offerings too but I never had one.

How was a Commodore 64 not a PC? It had a couple different OS options, loaded programs from a floppy disk, saved data/files to same, could interface with printers, modems, dial up BBSes, etc.?

Do you just mean it wasn't x86? Or do you mean that in its stock, un-peripheral'd form it was basically a glorified gaming console?

I really wish I had been into computers starting in the early 90s (I was born in '87). I feel like I missed out on the bandwagon and the crazy ride computer hardware was on up into the early 2000s.

Now it's all about mobile processing when it comes to big regular leaps in capability but even that is getting close to it's limits.

The Pentium years up to around the introduction of Core 2 Quads were a wild ride but it seems things have slowed drastically since.

That is the case.

I have the feeling that CPUs and the desktop are going to be defined by how Zen does, and will dictate the future on computing. If AMD doesn't light another fire under Intel, CPU/X86 performance gains are going to slow to a crawl, far worse than it is now.

So.... found some old pics. When I had a Prommy, then a Prommy and water cooling in the same case;

Took my P4 3gig to just over 4gig. And here I sit many years later, at a lower Ghz... Anyways. That's pretty damn cold. Was a challenge, expensive, but also fun. -54c! The old Raptor HD, let me load BF2 faster than almost anyone haha.

Any my Aqua Computer parts water cooled PC... was almost as expensive because all parts from Germany. Took a lot of time and some custom work, like the air duct up top and stuff;

Sorry for the spam.. Ahhh, the good 'ol days. I used to be really into this sort of thing. Now I spend the money and time on my cars. Which are wayyyy more expensive, but whatever.

If I remember correctly, it was just a keyboard looking computer that you had to hook up to your TV. It was a computer, but I didn't consider it a real pc without a dedicated monitor. Maybe I'm just thinking about the vic 20 though and am confused..

I had a Step-Thermodynamics slot A Athlon that I believe ran at the magical 1GHz. I thought it was pretty neat at the time, but performance increases were coming so fast back then I think I only used that system for 6 months before upgrading again. Ahhh.... the bad old days.

My father talked me into getting a Celeron 300A with the highest end Step Thermodynamics cooler. That ended up being one of my most regretted PC related purchases. It took them forever (months) to actually ship it and I was stuck using an old P166 while I waited for it to come. Even with this ultra fancy cooler the chip only managed to reach 450MHz (which most chips would reach with a standard cooler). It was basically a peltier connected to an L bracket with 4 regular CPU coolers glued on. It burned a good chunk of power on its own. Worst of all, the cooler cost twice as much as the CPU. I should have just gone with a regular cooler.

Did he pay the tab for that? Lol
