You could just get an offline GPS navigation app for your phone, it'd be cheaper than buying a whole new device.

Yeah, been looking into that a bit, nothing has really impressed me yet. I'll try the navfree, I tried mapfactor and it's ok.

And a surprise to me, it took 300 mbs of map downloads for 3 days of driving. Maybe thats not unreasonable but I didn't think it would be near that much. Every time I stop for gas, etc I think it's recalculating the directions, kind of irritating.

I use Copilot premium Europe and its pretty good, I'm not sure if the North american version is as fully featured though.

Theres plenty of both paid and unpaid nav apps.

I use Google Maps for navigation, but Waze for crowd-sourced traffic enforcement data.

Paired with other electronic countermeasures, they do quite a good job at preventing unwanted tickets.
Hmm, I hadn't considered this point until just now. I'm thinking this weekend the family is going to make a trip to Busch Gardens, I'll use Waze to get me there and that should be a good trial for the app.

Again, thanks for thoughts everyone.

For going somewhere new where I actually need directions, I'll run GMAP because I like the actual directions (spoken) it gives me. Waze is a little too simplified and not as exact.

I have waze open for almost all my drives and will just have it run in the background with GMAP in the foreground for the verbal warnings of cars, cops, etc.

Interesting idea. Thanks.

I generally use Google Maps except when there's a state-of-emergency in effect. Like a flood (Boulder, Colorado, last Sept), or a snowstorm, or something similar. If you need to get somewhere where most of the roads are closed or dubious, Waze becomes essential.
