Form the sound of some of these comments, they better ship the 390X in a full-length form factor, even if the last third is empty space.

The railven edition is not going to happen. I called amd 2 month ago and told them it should fit in my m-itx 304 case - max length 28cm. And btw add 4gb to get to 8gb i told them. They answered they needed 2 months extra for new hbm solution and revamped mem interface with desing, evaluation, production, testing, and distribution.

Technologies like High Bandwidth Memory are unlikely to make a huge impact in the professional market in the short term, since first-generation HBM (High Bandwidth Memory) deployments are limited to 4GB of RAM or less, and most workstation cards offer 12 to 16GB at the high-end.

Hmmm....

So no 8GB HBM cards?

The rumor mill is absolutely astonishing, and what is really staggering - nobody absolutely have full confidence what will happen with next gen AMD cards.

Amazing, even Apple does not have such secrecy.

Bah... maybe I should just buy a 290X now...

You should wait.

1. R9 300 series will force even bigger price cuts on R9 290/290X on clearance.
2. If R9 300 series flops, you could pick up a 970 with 2 games. Those coupon codes are valid until July 31st.
3. Without seeing the performance of R9 290X vs. 970 in TW3, I think it's a risky move. Just look at Project CARS. Do you want to end up buying a card that's beaten by a 960 in one of the most highly anticipated games of 2015?

Agreed. If it comes with 4GB of RAM, then it looks like it may be aimed squarely at the 980. Maybe it will be billed as a 980 competitor at a similar price point but competitive with the Titan on performance.

That's true too. 15-20% faster than a 980, priced at $549 even with 4GB of VRAM is very enticing for 1080P-1440P users.

Are you crazy? The retail cards are right around the corner.

Don't mean to harp on the issue but that is the kind of consumer confidence amd kinda has right now, for an apu fan like me I'm like, where da faq is Carizzo, so for the gpu guys I can understand their agony.

Guys, remember that R9 200 series is produced at TSMC 28nm process.

If the rumor R9 300 about 20nm is wrong, worst case should be 28nm SHP from Global Foundries. You do not want to miss out on either of them.

Fiji is faster than Hawaii with 640GB/s of memory bandwidth, it's silly to buy Hawaii at all.

Just wait for Fiji slides to be leaked then make an informed decision.

Also, Lisa Su noted that while AMD had started multiple 20nm designs, those projects aren’t going to come to market, due to minimal profitability on that silicon.

Cloudfire, CEO already said no 20nm products coming to market.

Well I guess my issue is this:

1) Would buy a 390X day 1 in a heartbeat if it were 8gbs.

2) If it's NOT 8gb but only 4, then given that it is also a stopgap to 14/16, I'm actually better served with a 290X/970 for now and just get the real deal in 2016.

3) Can the 290X realistically sell any lower? They are bleeding money as it is. I'm actually worried if 390X comes out, is only 4gb and they EOL the 2xx series (since they've probably stopped making them by now). Then I'd be faced with a very expensive stopgap.

AMD most likely isn't selling 290X at negative gross profit margin; they're making money per unit sold.

That said, I think the new launches will focus on improving performance to get AMD back into higher price points rather than bringing anything new to current price points.

Totally. See I don't doubt 390X will be faster, even much faster. With 8gb, it will be viable for decently long, so I can justify the price. But if it's only 4 gb, my dilemma is, do I want to pay ~3x what the 290X costs for something that I may need to replace in less than 2 years.

Well this one must be correct. All the ones that say otherwise must be wrong.

Oh I missed that one. Thanks.
I guess that was a possibility, good to have it finally confirmed.
We are looking at 28nm SHP then. Will be interesting to see if they have made a more compact design and what gain it will give over 28nm HP from TSMC.

What makes you think there won't be in-between options like $399-499 R9 390?

I think a lot of gamers are scared about high prices because NV's marketing set the stage that makes many believe $500-550 is now somehow the status quo/normal for mid-range chips. It isn't and AMD will prove it once more with R9 300 series. Remember HD5850 was $259, HD6950 was $299, HD7950 was $449, R9 290 was $399. Even if Fiji XT is $500+, there will undoubtedly be a 2nd tier R9 390 card below $500.

Also, you'll still have the option of buying a 970 with TW3 and Batman come mid-June. I think right now $280 for an R9 290X is too expensive since GTX970 is $315 with $60 worth of games that can be readily resold or used if you are interested in them. Alternatively, I see PowerColor R9 290 for $220 on Newegg. If you just want a stop-gap 15-18 months solution and don't want to spend $500+ on a 4GB card to keep beyond 2 years, why even pay $60 extra for an R9 290X over the 290? You could grab this R9 290, sell it for $100-130 in 15-18 months and just ride the wave all the way to next gen cards. I honestly don't see how 290X is worth $280 over a $220 290.

I run in 4k so I need at least a 6GB card (8GB really). I'm running 3 older Titans in SLI right now. I really want to upgrade. If the 390x is only 4GB I'd probably end up waiting for the 980Ti.

I hope this is the year of 4K for me, and I hope it will be accomplished with a single new AMD GPU.
