supposedly we have our 1st benchmark of the AMD hawaii volcanic islands gpu. this is done on dmark11 firestrike benchmark. their result is supposedly obtained with a QA (quality assurance) sample card.

a quick google search will get you geforce titan results ranging in the 4400 - 4700 point area (example)
if this holds up to be legit then Nvidia has a rather serious problem especially if this gets bundled with a never settle and for a price point competitive with a gtx 780
furthermore this is a huge improvement over the hd 7970ghz edition which only gets (most days) 3400-3700 points

Odds are pretty good the AMD card will undercut the price point for the Titan by a good amount, and likely the GTX780 as well. Before the Never Settle bundles are taken into account.

furthermore than 780 needed to be overclocked. if the hawaii here is stock and not a finished product yeah we can safely call this ball game over after you fact or in the amd overclock (assuming its of good quality)

Well, that's a factory overclocked 780, though. If this firestrike score is legit, it's pretty impressive nonetheless - a stock Titan gets around 4550ish while a stock 780 is in the 4400 range. With this 9xxx being 4850ish (if true) I'd expect a factory overclocked 9xxx to score several hundred higher as well, although gaming benchmarks will be the better metric to judge things by.

Anyway, I remain optimistic. I don't expect AMD to outright beat Titan but if they are reasonably close to par, it will be a great holiday season for fans of both brands (nvidia lowering prices possibly, etc).

I would not have a lot of faith in this leak if I were you. There's still a lot that is going to change in the next month.

I've seen stock titans(no water etc) with an overclock breaking 5200 on this test. It really means nothing until we see actual reviews anyway.

Yes but the Titan costs 1k. The 9970 should be $600 or less.

both will be same or 5 to 6% difference nothing more.The best thing to look for is bundle of free games and price which really i think AMD won in that although i am Nvidia fanboy.

Awesome for potential upgraders if this benchmark is true. It will force Nvidia to cut prices on their highest end cards and released a fully unlocked GK110 Geforce chip to maintain their undisputed performance advantage. But in the end, not really that exciting. We're seeing new high end products that are just now equaling their competitors products (though likely at a more reasonable price). I'm done with 28nm and waiting for 20nm GPU's.

Fiscal years don't match calendar years, so Q4 2013 would pin it right around October (which is what rumors indicate). Wait - Q4 2013 is in calendar Q4 anyway, isn't it? The rumor is an October release with a BF4 discount or bundle - or something along those lines. Shrug.

You make it sound biased toward nvidia. Was/is AMD not competitve with there HD 7xxx I think so in fact they were/are better than the nvidia counterparts when all things considerd.

Oh, nvidia biased. What the? Well, I bought 2 7970s at launch and in retrospect, they really screwed up at launch. AMD's PR rep at rage 3d admitted as much (stated they've learned a lot of lessons from that). Remember, 7970 launched with beta drivers that had horrible performance and weren't WHQL certified, semi-broken crossfire, eyefinity not working (with the original Dec 2011 driver) among other things. Now 4-5 months later a lot of those issues were rectified, and better drivers were released which increased performance by 10-20% - but at launch things were a mess.

Now once a lot of those problems were fixed and the price was lowered (and the game bundles) I considered the 7970 a great card. Heck, I still consider the 79xx series great GPUs. But at launch they definitely screwed some things up which is what I mentioned in my earlier post. Hopefully they learned lessons from that launch and will not repeat it with the R9xxx.....that's all i'm saying....as I said, I want AMD to be successful with their next launch because competition will be good for everyone regardless of their brand preference.

Would a 9970 or 9950 be a worthwhile purchase for a Q9550 @ 3.5 rig? Or would something like a 760 be more appropriate? It currently has two 6870 cards in CF.

IMO Sandy or better. Shogun & ARMA 2 - 4770K and 5Ghz Sandy is easily twice as fast as a Q9550

given the currrent pricing of GTX 780 and Titan, a HD 9970 at Titan perf for USD 600 is very good. add to it BF4 game bundle and its very attractive. If anything it should bring price cuts on Nvidia side which is good for the market.

I'm done with 28nm and waiting for 20nm GPU's.

With AMD refreshing HD7970 series on 28nm, perhaps 20nm is facing delays for whatever reasons (wafer costs, wafer allocation to other customers, etc.).

However, TSMC says 20nm volume production is on track for Q1 2014. Maybe this will be a very short-lived refresh if AMD/NV can launch 20nm parts by say July-August 2014. Maybe AMD just wants to have a more competitive line-up for the next 8 months right before the holiday 2013 season? I agree with you though that 28nm refresh at this point is still underwhelming unless AMD does the unthinkable and prices this card at $499 or something.

The Titan shouldn't even be discussed anymore. Galaxy GTX780 HOF is $690 and it will beat the Titan without any problems. It even has the world's record for the fastest single GPU on LN2. At this point 9970 needs to offer better value or performance than after-market GTX780s since many after-market 780s are now 15-17% faster than a stock 780.

If AMD sells this for about 550, they'll have a winner on their hands for sure. I might have to consider selling my 780 and getting a couple rather than buying another 780.
