I believe its a Zen briefing. Mabe a little about the dual chip 490?

quote:
"It might also be a briefing before public ZEN presentation, which is expected on December 13th. AMD could make a short demo of both."

So it's 490 Vega 10 and Vega 11 is rumored to be the 580? Sense... This does not make....

Good to hear that Vega might be nearing a launch. If Vega launches in early Q1 2017 I would be surprised as I was expecting more of a late Q1 2017 launch.

I sure hope they don't launch Vega with their typical reference design that every tech site uses for most of their reviews. This seems to shoot AMD in the foot every time, AIB partners always come out with better performing cards shortly after that - that perform better against the competition.

Fury reference design was bad? na

Mabe they should just release a good reference design.

R9 Nano is possibly best reference design for a GPU that has ever been.

If it launches in q1 no matter what I'll be somewhat happy. I'm expecting q2 which upsets me.

Q1 early? Like January? Lawd I'd be pleased.

Fury didn't have a reference design. They haven't released a good reference design.
Like I've said before they should have vendors submit cooler designs to them, and the best design each gen gets dubbed the "reference" and amd uses their cooler and pays them a small royalty or whatever they need to do.

Either way, using their own design... Honestly amd shouldn't even choose the voltage and clock speeds. They just suck at this portion of gpu delivery. Just engineer the chip and that's it.

Tri-X became the de facto Fury reference. XFX and Powercolor copied it, and then Sapphire just further refined it for Nitro.

I think it should be the new standard for AMD high wattage GPUs. 200W+ on blower is a disaster.

Well if they get the power usage down , it would be great.
I think Vega will address this.

What would be the point of a secret unveiling to the press? I could understand developers and oem's. Showing the press something they can't talk about would seem a waste of time.

AMD should leak anti-hype after all the WCFFTech nonsense that got people riled up about 480X.

Leak: Vega 10 is 2304SP Polaris 10 with HBM2 and a minor tweak. 480X +~10% performance
Vega 11 is 4096SP, but not due until 2018 and AMD's biggest and best chip until 2019. Slower than GTX 1080.

There's no way they can actually do worse than that! Expect the worst, be pleasantly surprised?

5 days before the supposed official announcement of a product that won't be released before April? I don't see any strategic reason AMD would benefit from or want that.

Mabe the press will see more than they announced?
And as usual we will see leaks for the next few months?

I would think if they had something killer it would have been leaked all over the place already. I mean every day they are loosing sales to the 1070/1080.
That's the way it usually works , correct?.

To give the press time to write decent quality articles in time for NDA release, rather than have them regurgitate press releases. To investigate if they see the need, to ask follow-up questions, to put things into perspective, to make relevant comparisons, to analyze the impact on the industry and community. Also, telling the press something while having them sign an NDA is a good way of preventing leaks.

The reasons for doing this are countless. The (good) reasons for not doing so are essentially zero.

It doesn't really matter what they do.
You will even see people saying that there is no point upgrading because there is enough performance as it is.

True and concerning. If AMD has market altering products coming, there is no way they would want anything leaked just days before the announcement that would steal their thunder or tip off Nvidia and give them time to come up with a quick response strategy. The unveiling of Zen and Vega is easily the most important day in AMD's history. If it's going to be better than we expected why risk leaks?

That's true, but. In reality they need to come with something faster, cheaper, and uses the same power envelope as the competition.

I would think that most people that wanted gtx1070/1080 performance already bought it. I'm sure there are some AMD holdouts though.

Nah. AMD has been awful at giving information out. Its been "too soon" or "too late" or badly presented. I think they have a good product and they are just going to shoot the straight and narrow. Give small previews and wait for a full announcement shortly before availability.

Remember back in the day when we wouldn't get an announcement until the day of availability? We would nail ATI and nVidia to the cross back then for "paper launches". Now its become such a norm that NOT doing a paper launch way before is deemed sketchy.

Just relax guys, AMD hopefully as some solid products coming out very soon and they don't want to screw up the releases.

Do any of the other tech giants do this? Intel, Nvidia, Apple, Samsung? Why does AMD need to give the press a heads up when no one else does?

Again Vega is not schedule for release for months. If the press writes an in depth article of a non existent product in 5 days or two weeks is inconsequential.
