NE's wrapping is adequate. I think most HDD failures are primarily a reflection of the quality of the drive.

Just look at the NE user ratings of WD HDDs versus any other brand. WDs all get about 80% ratings of 5. Seagates rarely get over 55%, often below 50%. Even Seagate's ES.2 (enterprise class) HDDs are at or below 55%. The Samsung 1TB Spinpoint is at 66%.

WDs are currently the best quality drives out there.

Only brand i'm really trusting these days, but it seems it was the 1.5tb seagate drive failures that drove them to a ditch. WD only needs one screwup before we stop trusting them as well.

On that positive note, i got this drive a while ago and it's absolutely great. The HDTach scores are astounding, and the transfer rates are unbelievable. I have a gigabit network and a WHS... transfering 20 gigs of anime was a blur.

Seems like newegg may be packing a little better than before. Wish I could of bit on another one, but had bigger priorities. Its just a matter of time till this is the regular price anyway. I am happy for all of you that bit on the deal and drives arrived well.

What's special about these drives? I'm looking at getting a new drive, 1 to 1.5 TB. I don't have much preference on brand, but I've been seeing good things with Samsung drives in the past couple of years. I'm guessing any drive I look at in that size is going to be 7200rpm, 16-32 mb cache.

Mmm yes that does sound pretty nice. 3 yr warranty is nice, and I probably wouldn't buy a drive without it, but a 5 yr is great.

*On Newegg's packing. I think it depends on who is doing the packing at their warehouses on that day. I've generally received very well packed OEM HD's and other equipment. In fact sometimes I think it's overkill. I have had reports from some of my friends of inadequate packaging. Basically it's a crap shoot and you hope the person packing your gear doesn't skimp or get lazy.

These black drives in particular are pretty much top of the line performance drives. They have two proccessors on board for faster reading and a ton of cache. They are almost as good as much more expensive Raptors from WD and better than most other drives in same price range. Fast and quiet.

I would definitely get this drive over $80 seagate deal.

EDIT: Personally I have black 640gb drive. Reason I went with 640gb is because it only has 2 platters so less heat and less noise over 1tb.

I just received a 640GB from NE. The drive was in bubble wrap in the bottom of the box. All the foam filler was on top of it. Thus the only protection against shock from the bottom was the bubble wrap. I consider this inadequate packing.
