Sorry but this is not even any where near hot, and is in fact quite cold. Hard drive deals for $.50 are now the higher priced deals these days. Most recently you could have gotten a Maxtor 160 from Staples for ~$35 after a $30 rebate and the same drive from Office Depot for $79.99 yesterday with no rebates. The Western Digital 160 was $20 AR at Circuit City yesterday and $49.99 recently at Fry's AR. Or how about WD 250 GB for $84 AR. The list goes on. If it's less than $.50 GB it might actually be a good deal. This isn't.

That's true, but I would consider this kind of hot for the ones who missed the deal at Staples and the people who don't want to deal with mail in rebates ( Like me ), I picked up a WD180GB from the WD online store for 110.00 and I considered that hot and I still do.

OK do the math. That's $.61 a GB. A 100 GB drive for $79.99 + $7.61 shipping is ~ $.88 a GB. I'll let any considering buying make their own decision about whether it's hot or not.

Current decent deals on drives this week include a Seagate 160 GB at Best Buy for $89.99 after a $70 rebate. Also the Maxtor 160 GB at Staples for $109.94 out the door after a $20 Instant In-Store rebate.

nah, not true unless you have a really old motherboard. I ran it fine without a controller card on a epox 8rda

8rda is are not that old - many people with factory machines like 2-4 year old dell or gateways will run into this

New - but on clearance - not sure what deal is anyhow - I have not really seen 100GB drives from WD they usually sell in 60, 80, 120 sizes - oh well but they have the coveted 8MB cache so they must be reasonably fast

Also, some of us without Winxp Sp1, can't use the full 160GB.

Even if you can't use all of 160 GB you probably will upgrade to a newer MB or computer at some point in the future. Of course by then hard drives will $.25 a GB or less. And with Blue Ray DVD discs having a capacity of 25 to 40 GB you won't really need a huge amount of hard disc storage.

Good point since 48bit addressing was not supported prior to SP1 - but why don't you install SP1?

Seems to me when comparing apples to apples.. you would consider the cost of replacing a drive after that crappy one year warranty is up.. so for me there really isn't any factor except which drive provides a 3 or 3+ year warranty. I have replaced the Majority of my drives within the second year for bearing or whatnots.. I'm far more inclined to base a hard drives value on what it's warranty is like than what it's capacity and cost per gig is. That being said.. even WD has a good portion of drives with 1 year warranty. And unless you want to take your drive out and drop it every 360 days so you can get a new one the 3 year is the best bet.



80.00 is a great price for a 3 year warranty drive 100+ gigs.. just try finding a AFTER MIR deal with that warranty.

I agree with you but you DO know that the WD retail 8mb cache drives only carry a 1 yr now?

I've got 5 different Maxtor drives. One is over 3 years old, 2 others 1 to 2 years or so, and one new one. All are doing OK, so I don't care what the warranty is. Buy good drives to start with and you'll have them for a while. You can find plenty of people who complain about the reliability of WD drives, along with their loudness and high operating temperatures. I'm sure you can also find people who have had problems with every other mfg's drives. If you're putting something important on your drive(s), back it up or use Raid.

You can extend the warranty of your hard drive to 3 years for 15 dollars, I just did it
