Looks like Dell took the harddrive off their site. Does anyone know of a $100 off $400 coupon for Dell Home?

Did anyone actually receive this drive yet? I just had to call Dell to confirm that I still wanted to wait for my drive. It's now pushed back to May 6th.

BTW.. I just bought the Dell OEM (WD JB) drive for $125. Should I just go ahead and cancel the order on this retail drive? Seems like a pretty huge price difference for the difference between OEM and retail. That is, if this Dell drive is basically the OEM version of this retail drive.

I still haven't. Also got the May 6 email.
I also saw the OEM deal and actually jumped late on it (Dell raised the price back to 189 today). Neither item has shipped so I'm wondering if I should cancel my original 120 gig order which is clearly labeled "WESTERN DIGITAL
120GB WD1200JB Internal EIDE Ultra ATA/100 7200RPM Hard Drive w/8MB Cache" for $198.28
and just keep the OEM drive "DELL
Hard Drive; 120GB Ultra ATA/100, 7200RPM, for Dell Dimension" for $149.67.

Its a $50 dollar difference but then again if it adds another 2 years of warranty then I might just keep my original order.

Hee hee...kinda funny to see all this WD 120GB 8MB Cache POST all over anandtech or all the other sites...
I ordered this 2 WDs and cancelled it....Ordered the dell's 120GBs 2 of them @ ~$140 each...tried to cancel them after placing the order @ ~$125...but then those 2 were IN TRANSIT already...so what the heck...just $14 mores...I might as well raid all 4 of these babies....or eGAY 2...Now after reading the disappearing fiascos...luckily i found both of my $125s In PRODUCTION...I guess I am just.......hmmmmmmm....let me do the math.... 2 x $140 + 2 x $125 = $280 + $250 = $530 poorer...=( =P

At $187, my thermometer only showed 80F for this HDD.
At $143, my thermometer jumped to about 130F.........

Is this $187 drive a retail drive? I'm expecting the cellophaned blue and black WD box with this drive. If that's not what this is, I'm going to cancel it because I did get in on the $125 OEM WD JB deal.

Didn't anyone get theirs yet to confirm this?

Careful of the 540's if they're not fluid bearing models. While most of the maxtor's I've owned have been reasonably quiet my recent 540 was the noisiest thing I'd ever encountered. It saw eBay faster than my oversized christmas sweater!

Back to this topic... Can anyone please confirm that this drive for $187.06 is the retail box version of the drive? If it just comes in an anti-static bag like the OEM drives, I'll take a pass, but if it's the real retail package, I'll keep my order alive.

Thanks again.

I've gotten on this deal before and the drive is NOT retail drive, just OEM. However, you'll get a THREE-YEAR warranty through Western Digital instead of ONE-YEAR warranty through Dell, so I'd still keep the order. I ordered two of these on April 5 and they shipped, but I wasn't home to take them, so they are still with UPS. But they ARE coming.

To LukFilm

Can you please explain why are u so sure the drive has 3 years warranty, did you already received one from dell and vertify by WD? Because I called dell and their rep said this is a OEM drive and carry one year warranty by DELL, not WD.

this sucks.... i called a service rep to upgrade my shipping... and they denied me free next day shipping. I think they should be obligated to upgrade my shipping after delaying twice.

Just because they have a three-year warranty doesn't mean they are not OEM. They ARE OEM with a three-year warranty.

This thread was for the actual Western Digital drives at Dell's website. There is another thread for the Dell rebadged drives.

LukFilm,

I disagree. The info above I believe came from the WD warranty status page. If WD wasn't honoring the warranty, and those were indeed OEM, there would be no warranty status information. I don't have a link handy, but there was another post of a scan of one of the received drives. When ran thru the same WD web page, it came back with soemthing to the effect of no warranty thru WD.

If OEM, then warranty is NOT thru WD, right? if NOT oem, then WD honors warranty.

This has always been my understanding of oem vs non-oem (bulk).

GPz1100;

I think your concept of oem vs "non-oem" is in error. Just do a search on Price Watch for the WD 1200JB and see what pops up. A whole bunch of retailers selling oem drives. And almost all of them are advertising a three year manufacturers warranty. I could see a couple of them being wrong, but dozens??

Take a look. If you want to start with a well respected company, go to Newegg's website and read what they say. To put it simply, they are selling the WD1200JB drive as OEM and clearly stating that it comes with a three year manufacturers warranty. Here's part of the ad; "WD WESTERN DIGITAL "SPECIAL EDITION" 120GB 7200RPM EIDE HARD DRIVE MODEL # WD1200JB - OEM, DRIVE ONLY 3.5 inch Form Ultra ATA 100 8.9ms Seek Time 8MB CACHE BUFFER - 3 Year Manufacturer Warranty
Model#: WD1200JB" Seems pretty clear to me. I can find dozens of other retailers saying the same thing.
