So I have a reasonably new (maybe just a month old, now) Western Digital 160GB hard drive that I picked up to allow me to backup shows from my ReplayTV.
I've been using it for most of this past month running as the only device attached to the Promise Ultra 100TX2 controller card that comes included with the drive -- haven't really deleted anything from it, just have been using ReplayPC to copy TV shows from my ReplayTV over the network to my computer.
Everything was working fine until Monday night.
I tried to do the following: remove one of my older hard drives that was failing completely from the system (it was attached to an old Promise Ultra66 card), actually place the 160gb drive in a drive bay, and place my new DVD burner into the case and hook it up to a separate channel on the aforementioned 100TX2 controller card.
For whatever reason/combination of reasons, my system refused to boot with the Sony DRU-500A DVD burner installed. I didn't really try to use the 160 Gig HD at this point, although I did copy three or four files over. (each 1.4 gigs or so). I spent the last two/three days trying to determine what was preventing the system from booting with the DRU-500A installed.
Last night, however, I went to boot the system with the DRU-500A disconnected so I could copy some soon-to-be-deleted files over to the 160 gig hard drive.
Everything appeared to be working, however I noticed when checking the Event Logs to see why the system hadn't booted previously that there had been a message saying Delayed Write had failed with the WD hard drive. I could read files from the drive no problem, just not write. I tried to transfer files over, and the entire system would go down because after the system buffers were full, everything would freeze. The same thing occurred if I just tried to copy a file to the hard drive -- it would start copying, then stop. The "Time Remaining" count would start going up until that same "Delayed Write has failed" error comes up. At which point the drive was effectively useless.
I tried a new IDE cable, I tried connecting it to a different power cable. I tried connecting the drive to the older Ultra 66 card to see if that would help. No change. I removed it from the case and put it back outside the case in case airflow (or lack thereof) was causing problems -- I've left it off all night, and am about to check, but I sincerely doubt that will help anything.
I'm at wit's end. It hasn't been a good week in general, and now to have lost 4 weeks of shows I REALLY wanted to save (most importantly, MacGyver episodes)... this just wouldn't be a nice finish.
Anyone have any ideas I could try?
