wd 30gig hd, when partitioned only 10gig shows up HELP!!!!

i just got a western digital 30gig ide 7200rpm hd and im trying to install it but when i partition it only 10gig shows up insteed of the 30gig. i have win98 and a pretty good comp.
now im not to good with this stuff im kinda new to it and if u can help me please say it in a way i can understand

Need to provide more info. One possible problem is if your new drive is ATA66 or ATA100 and you're running off a motherboard that only supports ATA33 then this could be the source of the problem. Western Digital has a program to switch the drive to ATA33/66/100 as required by your MB. Also, you may have not done fdisk/format routine properly, i.e. did you create two partitions and not format the second?

Had a similar problem a few months ago with a WD 20gb 7200 drive. He configured the new drive as master and an old Maxtor 5.7 as slave, and the partition options came up only as 2.1gb. We finally setup again with only the new drive as single and the old drive disconnected - and this time the software allowed a full 20gb partition??? Later put the old drive back in as slave and transferred what we wanted.

I am working on my new 30 GB Maxtor drive right now.

I formatted with only one large partition which my BIOS reads correctly.

However, when I installed a drive image of my O/S and programs from my old 13 GB WD drive, Windows only shows 13GB. (Open My computer - C "properties&quot. Is this because of my Drive Image? Will Windows ever allow me to install anything over 13 GB? Or will have to do a fresh install of WIN98SE?

Sounds like its your image thats downsized the partition.
If you have partitionmagic just run this and resize the partition to full HD again.

Did you copy an old hard drive over to your new hard drive! Because if you did then that is the problem! The old drive was a 10gig and thats how big the partion was and when you copied the old hd to the new if made your 30gig partion into a 10gig partion! All you have to do is re-install Win98 or Win98se which ever you have and that will fix the problem! I have seem this on a lot of peoples computers that I have worked on and that is how we fixed them! It will work trust me!

Yep, that's what I finally figured out after some thought (use of the search function and another "new" useless post about partitioning.

Since I don't have Partition Magic, the simplest thing for me to do would be to use Maxtor's utility to create TWO partitions - One 13 GB for my Drive Image (since it is finally perfected and has the apps exactly the way I want them) and one 17 GB partition for my downloads, games, mp3s etc.
