Since yesterday TigerDirect has the WD 3TB Red drives at @$140 minus a $30 rebate good for up to 2 drives. Today only, they have a $20 rebate off $100+ purchases that specifically states it's good with other rebates.

Sooo... if you're willing to do the double rebate hustle it's $90 for 1 or $200 for 2 drives.

Also, ShopRunner eligible.

Hmmm... my SSDs came in those nasty plastic clams rattling around with a couple airbags.

Would be nice if they treated HDDs better, but I don't know.

I just noticed, for those people that use AmEx, they got a $30 off $100 offer... so, you can end up with this drive for $140 - $30(amEx--instant) - $30 rebate - $20 rebate - Shoprunner (also free with Amex) = $60

Can you explain this? When i go to checkout, i don't see anything but the rebate. with Shoprunner AND Amex.

I wondered about this as well. I believe he's referring to an offer on Amex's site. If you log in to your account, look for the "Offers for you" tab. Among the offers listed should be one for a $30 statement credit on a purchase of $100 or more at TigerDirect. I doubt it'll be instant. The fine print says it will post within eight weeks of purchase.

I bought one of these to be a cold spare for my NAS and I'll update here with the results of all the rebates.

Oh.. Go to the AmEx site, log in, and at the bottom, you will see 'special offers'
You should see stuff like Amazon $25 off 75 & tiger direct, $30 off $100... and a bunch of other companies.

For the shoprunner, it was a e-mail Amex sent, it said click this to enroll now into shoprunner... and that is free for a year I guess it is.

cbunn, yeah, it is instant. I just used it, and they sent a e-mail saying thanks for using AmEx.. blah blah blah..

Looks like it's extended and they're officially pointing it out in their latest deal email.

Ah, ok.

My Costco Amex doesn't have a TigerDirect offer available for me. Booooo....

Anyone have any experience with these drives? I am leaning on purchasing one for my single drive NAS...hard to pass up at that price.

Any input is appreciated

I've got 4 in my server, no early issues but of course not old enough to have reliability notes.

Running zfs on them and I'm happy with the results.

Mine just arrived, and it was a *huge* box, however, it had the HD inside a plastic shell, and then around that, two layers of pillow bubble wrap.
Haven't yet tested the HD, since it was 5F outside, and it will take awhile to get to room temp before I can see if it works OK.

Edit* BTW, this is the first internal HD I have seen that comes in the clamshell package, that is a PITA to open.

Took around 7 1/4 hours to format, but, so far, so good...

I got the e-mail as well, and while I suppose the rebate is instant in that it requires no forms to be mailed, it will still take some time for the credit to arrive.

No offer on my Blue Cash card

Odd. I've got a Blue Everyday Cashback (the no annual fee one) and I've got plenty of offers, TigerDirect included.

They are very nice. I bought five a while back for a ZFS server I built. After I installed them, I hammered them with reads and writes to stress test them and they all came through with clean SMART tests. If a drive is going to fail early, it is often within the first couple months. So just give them a decent workload right away so you can get any defective units replaced under warranty and before things get critical.

As for performance, using bonnie++, I got over 140MB/s sequential read and write speed on the individual drives. They are also very quiet.

I paid around $140 per drive at the time, so the sale price isn't very low. The rebates certainly make it attractive. But bear in mind that the rebate on the drive itself has a limit of two and the other two rebates are one per customer.

I hate those things. This is where Amazon shines. I read that one can use a can opener to get into the clamshells with less effort. Haven't tried it, though.

I don't recall where I got them... perhaps it was Amazon? 2 of my recent drives came in these neat air-bubble "boxes". One end of the box can fold open and you just slide the drive out. Best packaging I've seen in the consumer market. My other favorite I've only seen in enterprise and that's the 2 cardboard frames with stretch wrap sandwiching the drive and fitted in a box. The 2 plastic end-caps that do the same job are pretty nice as well.

144 (shipped) - 30 - 20 = 94 dollars for a 3tb drive...

If you only need a single drive the green is on sale for $119. I dont see a reason to get the red over the green for one drive...unless I missed something

For a single drive system, there is no technical advantage, though the Red might last longer since it is designed for constant use. Also, the warranty is longer on the Red drives, I believe.

I bought mine as a hot spare for my NAS which is already using 3TB Red HDDs.

Anyone else having problems with the $20 rebate ?
I just got my $30 rebate, but not the $20.
When checking the $20, it said "100 %Audit: NO BARCODE submitted"

The rebate form just asked for the invoice, nothing else.
Trying to call 1-800-286-9146 to resolve this is impossible, it rings and rings and rings forever, no matter what time is called.

Stupid rebates.

I saw a similar type of note on the $20 rebate and worried a bit about it, but it still came in the mail shortly after the $30 one. I think the note is just that there was no UPC attached, which would be abnormal for other rebates, but as this one is for a general purchase it isn't required.

That's a pretty attractive price considering what I paid for my other (2) 3TB reds that are in my Synology... But, my only issue is.. I haven't been able to fill the other two yet... First world problems...
