Anyone know if the drive can be removed easily? I'm thinking of installing it as a internal drive.
Thanks

Thanks OP. Great deal. Got a $20 coupon off eBay, so it is an excellent deal even before the rebate.

It is fairly easy (6 screws to remove, 2 in the back and 4 bottom) and slide out the drive. However, you will break the warranty seal in the process and your warranty is toast :frown:

A comment on the first page confirmed that the drives are "WD4000KS, one of their older SATAII 16mb cache models."

You are talking about the enclosure warranty, and not the drive warranty, right?

AAKS is newer version of the drive. KS models have been around for >1 year.

So is the warranty on the drive void after opening the enclosure or the warranty on the controller ?

The serial# on the drive is the same on the box. The part# comes up as Elements External drive (WDE1U4000N) for the drive serial#. So I think this means the "Unit" has 1 year warranty.

Unit = External Enclosure + Drive + Power Supply

If you make a RMA claim, they will expect you to ship the entire unit NOT just the HDD.

My conclusion is if you break the seal, you have no warranty.

Well I picked up two to make a internal raid setup. Not bad, about 80.00 each after rebate and coupons, and I'll have 2 "free" enclosures too. I'll take one of the enclosures and make an external drive of one of my older sata drives. I already opened them up. Both are a WK4000AAKS. Made in 1/2007. Western web page says it is under warranty until 3/24/2008. So, I'm thinking if it fails, I could get a new one? I have not done a Western Digital RMA. Do they require any receipts? If they do, there goes the warranty I guess.

anyone get any issue in putting this unit up and running?

When I connect it to my PC, it doesn't "see/recognize" the device.

Thanks for the help in advance, and thanks OP!

No problems for me. Try switching USB ports. I did find it odd there is no on/off switch though. Cheap bastards.
