finally spoke to a costo rep
she stated its part of the computer and is only covered under their 'computer' warranty
which is apparently only 6 months

so much for their unlimited warranty on hard drives
hehe

How can you tell if your AMEX doubles the warranty? I have a blue card....

Also, how does the warranty extension work? Lets say this drive goes out 1.5 years after you buy it, what do you do? Send it to AMEX?

BTW: If you have a debit card, they will take it. My friend has a debit Visa and it works just fine there.

Also, last time I checked AMEX doesn't necessarily double the warranty, it only seems that way because most warranties are 1 year. They only extend it by one year.

anyone??

Instead of bumping, why not contact AMEX yourself [use the phone # on the back of the credit card]?

Sitting on hold isn't fun

I'm also wondering if anyone has actually tried to use the "extended warranty" that they offer... real world testimony is better than some company's marketing bs.

Not true - you can RETURN computer equipment up to 6 months after purchase date. After that ORIGINAL MANUFACTURERS WARRANTY applies. If this is retail drive then you should get at least 1 year .

Yo2, I had hoped you were right, but unfortunately that was not the case.

I bought this WD4000KD-00AB0 from Costco, installed it and everything was fine. I then decided to register the drive with WD. I bought the drive on June 26, 2006. The WD warranty expires on October 16, 2006.

I am completely mystified as I thought that WD gives at least 1 year of warranty to new drives. I also found out that that the KD series is called first generation SATA at the WD web site when you register.

The drive is OK as mentioned before, but I wonder if I would be better off with a Seagate. I have had Maxtor with no problem whatsoever, but may be I was just lucky.

if you are looking for a good drive with a decent warranty go for seagate
specifically this one http://www.buy.com/prod/Seagate_Barracu...ULTRA_ATA_100/q/loc/101/202557401.html
and dont forget to use a 10% off coupon

i only stated that the 'unlimited' costco warranty does not apply to hard drives in general, i stated nothing about not being able to return elsewhere after the costco warranty expires
