I think you mean the 320GB model may consist of either two 160GB or one 320GB platter. The 640GB model we are debating here uses two 320GB platters, tuned for performance over tranquility.

You can use Hitachi Feature Tools to see/change your AAM setting. If you hear no difference in seek noise with AAM turned on or off, and there is no change in access time, then that means it's been hard-set by Western Digital.

Got mine from MWave on eBay using 20% MSFT cashback. Without the 10% PayPal code I used it'd come to $82 shipped.

Arrived today and AAM was set on 128. Disabling did nothing. Keeping it enabled and setting it to 254 did work though. Blows my Seagate 320GB out of the water:

I dont think I've seen an average read higher than that. Am on a Biostar 965PT. Seeks are low frequency, and barely audible, which is a shock since some reported louder, more-audible seeks when AAM was "disabled".

I got my drive from Directron today. HORRIBLE packaging. Sitting on the side of the box, one layer of bubble wrap and 3 airbags to fill the rest of the space. Instead of a standardized way of packing drives, they must just use whatever is on hand.

How would this drive be for an OS drive partitioned into OS (20 GB) and rest into storage/games? Right now I have a 120 GB SATA. Is this drive completely silent also?

Ive never had a failed WD but I did had a Maxtor that ate it.

Seagate used to be the best drive out their. Not any more. They seem to have a higher failure rate than even Maxtor. Read the reviews over at Newegg and other places.

Interesting...my drives were well bubble wrapped and suspended in popcorn. Better than most packaging I would say.

Directron at least offers the option to double-box so far as shipping the drives; Newegg's methods for packaging OEM drives have failed to impress me as of late...Wrapping in bubblewrap and then surrounding it with foam peanuts isn't enough when you're dealing with UPS as a shipper, IMHO...Particularly with the way that UPS plays floor hockey/soccer with packages going through the hubs/trucks.

Still, I suppose Newegg must still make money, and take the increased risk of additional DOA/RMA's as a reality of doing business.
