WD 800JB SE or WD Raptor?

I'am in the market for a second hard drive to back some of my files and need some advice. Currently I'am running a single WD 800JB SE drive. Since my system is an Intel 845E, should I go ahead and get another WD 800JB SE drive or a WD Raptor drive with a SATA controller for future proof? I will probably run my primary application on the WD Raptor drive and store my files on the WD 800JB SE drive if I go that route. Let me know what you guys think. Thank alot.

Well if you already got the storage and want the speed then why not!

Yup if you already have storage (80GB by the sounds of it) then getting a Raptor for boot and apps would be a good move performance wise.

I also say get the raptor, you will now have 116GB of space and be a lot faster at accessing certain data.

I went the raptor route and never looked back. In fact, I sold my 120 gig Diamondmax 9 to pick the raptor up. Great drive.

Not sure about PCMark 2002, but with a Raptor you'll be seeing a major decrease in seek time but a very slight boost in sustained transfer rate (about 10%). The Raptor is great for housing your operating system and apps, as you'll notice the difference in seek time acessing many small files. For data, it's a really poor allocation of your money.

I have an Intel 845E chipset so there are no onboard SATA controller. I will need to purchase a PCI SATA controller, but don't know which is the best SATA controller out there.

no, you wouldnt.

The only way you would see any performance increase at all is if you are caching in a MMORPG with tons of chars on the screen (with a gig of ram even thats hard to do).

The only thing raid would bring is possibly a second or two on load times. And thats only if it involves large files (100MB+)

Not necessarily in this order cause they all are limited by PCI Bus...Silicon Image, Highpoint(they have 1 with an external output) and Promise...

Most people have told me that the drives hooked to a PCI controller card perform just as well as hooked to the onboard IDE controller. I am not sure about SATA though,although I would think it would be the same as the PCI bus is faster than the onboard IDE controller.

Pretty much the same except on the Intel 865 and 875 chipsets which use native SATA for better performance.

Heh. I'm considering this. Raptors generally score 1400-1500 PCMark02 from what I've read, RAID0 Raptors around 2000, and my WD 80GB around 1200. Not that that means anything, I just use it for optimizing my o/c on my 9700, which probably sounds weird.

I'm planning on a Raptor soon. I figure OS, CPU intensive games and apps on the Raptor, business apps, data, etc on the 80GB. Haven't figured out what to do about my swap file yet, but give me some time to figure it out .

I'm wondering where to put the swap file as well.

I use my 80GB WD SE as my swap drive. Make defragging easier on the Raptors since the swap file doesn't keep bothering it.

Are you running a 3 drive system - Raid 0 Raptors plus WDSE 80GB as backup? If so, do you partition, and if you do, how do you have yours set-up?
