Interesting. What are your thoughts of getting one of these types of stand-alone NAS devices, like this Asustor, compared to re-purposing a spare desktop running Windows 10 (which would otherwise sit unused in a closet)?

I think that:
1) They're pretty handy, and generally feature-rich. All it takes to configure them, generally, is just a web browser.
2) They take up less space, and less power, generally, than building your own "server" out of desktop parts.
3) They are NOT cheaper than building your own, that's for sure, especially at the larger disk count server sizes.

If you want a mostly set-it and forget-it type appliance, to serve up your files and media, and maybe serve as a web server or DB or VPN server on your LAN or WAN, then it's good for that too, for the most part.

You do want to make sure to get one that is actively receiving support and updates, otherwise, security holes will probably get the better of it. Patches are important.

I'm still baffled why people pay so much for NAS with such inferior specs. A spare desktop will be loads more powerful and probably more reliable. You have control over motherboard, cpu, memory used. You also have full control over the software installed.

I think people just like the way they look and they seem to be in vogue with a certain set.

Well, if you only need a pair of larger-capacity HDDs in a mirror, for backups and some file storage, maybe some media streaming, honestly, the NAS is usually easier, and does take up less room. Not everyone want a server room in their living space (near the entertainment center, etc.)

Kind of like, why doesn't everyone drive a semi-trailer to the grocery store, I mean, you can get a LOT of groceries in one trip with one. Well...

Edit: I mean, I get the reasoning behind your comment, for an enthusiast, like myself, that more-or-less basically lives in a "server room" / "PC warehouse". But there are "normal" people out there too, so many on this forum forget that.

Edit: From a financial perspective, as this the Hot Deals sub-forum, yes, building your own is generally cheaper in the long run, what with feature and storage "creep". (Yeah, start with two drives in a mirror, then you find yourself getting into 4-bay NAS unts, unRAID server chassis with 8 drives, etc. Soon you've got your own rack stuffed with 20-bay Norco cases. @Red Squirrel , I'm looking at you. ) Plus, you get to run your own OS and/or Hypervisor layer.

True. Just wish they were built better and weren't so overpriced. They are good looking and probably quieter then a full server.

anyone shucked these and know what type of drives are in them? If I remember right, they used to be the newer WD Reds.

I agree if a spare desktop will work for you, but for example, if I gave my father a desktop and a hard drive and said "share this on the network", he could probably figure it out, but he'd get bored of reading tutorials and would give up. I think he represents a lot of buyers out there. If I gave him a NAS and told him to follow the instructions, he'd have it up and running pretty quick.

That, and I'd say most people (that arent on forums like this one) don't have any spare desktops. The "laptop only" crowd has been around for at least 10 years now.

if you just want a drive, they are white label WD red drives.

The 8TB one has voltage/bios mod that disables it in regular desktop. I had to tape over 1 pin to get mine going.

That's actually due to an updated SATA spec, intended for datacenters, but affecting home users the most, with traditional power supplies. Not supposed to be an issue with the two biggest (SOHO) NAS vendors, Synology and QNAP.

I think a molex to sata cable would be the most reliable solution. Using tape seems like trouble down the road.

It really depends. Those molex sata does not always work.

Use Kapton Tape for this. Once the plug is attached, it ain't going anywhere.
