last week target had a netbook for $199, but then i noticed that everyone else sells it at that price as well. so apparently the new price of a netbook is $199.

Now what does this have to do with the topic?

I picked up the USB 3.0 version of this at Best Buy this weekend for $99.00 apiece. I think USB 3.0 is worth the extra $15.00 but ymmv. Is the internal drive in this a 5400 rpm drive?

Still, a smoking deal for 2 gb of external storage. Great for media centers with no internal space or hooking to your DVR to offload movies. I'm using mine for Windows backup and pr0n.

Hot damn... I bought the same thing in a 500gig version for $60 not too far back from Target too. Not that I've filled it up yet, but it's about 1/2 full and I want to start ripping my TV dvds to digital files so that'll fill up fast. I think I'll have to pull the trigger on this one if I can find it.

i read on another deal site, that depending on where it was made, some of them have 7200 rpm drives inside.

i'd prefer usb 3.0 also, but its just another option .

Thanks for reminding me about the price match. That makes it easier to find the WD Black version. When you get to the store check underneath where it was made. Ones from Thailand contain the Green drive, Malaysia has the Black (7200) drive. There's nothing wrong with the Green drive, it's arguably more reliable as an external storage device since it generates less heat and spins slower. The Black drive is great if you want to use the HDD in a desktop.

However with the price match, that opens up the hunt to Staples, Office Depot and Best Buy. I'm off hunting.

I also agree with USB 2.0 being too slow for writing multi GB of info.. I've found that reading from USB 2.0 is great at 35MB/s but when writing more than about 4-8GB of stuff it starts at 35MB then consistently slows down to less than half! It'll take you about a day and a half to fill up 2 TB. It seems as if Win7 buffers to RAM and after it fills never buffers again. Strange. I haven't tested this with WinXP. I ended up going copying in chunks of 4GB-8GB instead.

The inventory checker is a liar!

Went down to the downtown target in Minneapolis & it was cleaned out! All that was left were the Rain check barcodes.

I didn't take one. What does one do with those?

Raincheck guarantees you'll be able to pick one up at that price when they get more stock, even when it's not on sale. So if you really wanted it you could have gotten a raincheck and waited till they got more stock then gone back and paid $85 for it.

Ah, Maybe I will do that in about 15 mins then.

Has it ever happened that they haven't gotten back stock of that particular item & are willing to give whatever superseded it on the shelf at the raincheck price?

Usually not from what I know. But they generally know what's on sale (as in they'll get more stock) vs. what's on clearance (they'll never see that product again) and they don't offer rainchecks on clearance items.
