Seagate and Samsung seem to be recommended a bit more frequently. I've had no problems with my WD (purchased 2004).

I've had very good experience using WD harddrives, the WD 120GB JB's still running quietly and reliably since 2002.

If anything, Maxtor is usually recommended less than anyone else these days. That said, drives can fail from any manufacturer.

I have never had any problems with western digital drives. I have 5 of them right now, all runnning flawlessly. Thats not counting the 2 250MB yes MB western digital drives I have from the early 90's that still run fine.

dvd's are your friend, and cheaper too. fast but hd = temporary storage *risky* *easy to lose data*

i have 2 WD IDE drives

caviar is it? well they are IDE and 2Mb cache, and the 40Gigger makes thee nastiest throbbing, whining noise, the 80gig hasnt suffered any noises yet, but i think its getting there, maybes a bad batch or something

i have 2 Samsung Spinpoint drives in my main machine, fluid bearings. i cant even hear them spin up, i cant hear them spinning and 90% of the time i cant even hear them accessing the platters. my friends HD that he has in his rig makes a really loud crunching clicking noise when accessing the drive.
my computers not exactly loud, but i cant hear anything from the samsungs when my computers on...and they are both nearly full!

Every so often I see a thread like this I chime in and say that Western Digital hard drives served me right over the years. At the moment, I have four WD drives (see my sig) in my main system and two smaller hard drives in my old Dell. I've not had any problems up to this point. For more storage space (I have a lot of video and digital photos) I use two external Seagate hard drives, again great performance.

whatever you get, just don't get a maxtor 160gig. they seem to fail quite frequently. i had a maxtor 80gig (7200rpm), and i now have a WD1200JB, and a maxtor 60gig (7200rpm), and personally i think the maxtor's tend to get noisy real fast... the "crunching" sound is noticable even over my 3 antec noisy fans.

i sold the maxtor 80gig within 3 months of use, and the WD developed bad sectors after 2 years of moving back and forth campus (which was RMA'ed, and this one works perfectly so far), and the maxtor 60gig is for backup.

i'd get whatever is cheapest and has the longest warranty. with that said i think seagate has 3 years warranty? but between WD and maxtor, i'd get a WD.

the caviar se are satas, 7200 rpm, 8mb buffer. i have a 250 and an 80 now and they are very quiet and have been great with my 74gb raptor.

All the 4 WD harddisks have never had any problems and they are 3 years old already

According to statistics
Segate > WD > Maxtor

WD has never given me any trouble...they are quality products...expecially if you can afford their raptors...if not i would suggest going seagate or sumsung becuase of more features and decibal measures...

anyway a lot of people have trouble with HD's becuase of impropper air flow and moving them around while in motion....

anyways i like WD a lot and for now will not buy anything else...

I've had nothing but good experiences with the 2 WD HD's I own. Both of them are more than two years-old and have never given me any problems. They are both the basic Caviar models (80GB and 120GB).

If I were building a new system, I'd choose between WD and Seagate.

I seem to buy a lot of WD drives. But I've bought maxtors, seagates, samsung and even ibm's/hitachis. All are still working.

Only time an HD crapped out on me was an old 8Gig samsung thats been in service for 11 years. I say that's pretty good. Recovered all data on it with freezer trick

Since 1985, I have had too many HDDs to remember - all brands. Very few failures - I believe only two in 20 years. Bottom line - they will all perform if they are taken care of and regularly maintained in a good environment. Their biggest enemy is heat and vibration.

Ive had no trouble from my 80Gb, 120Gb or 200Gb WD PATA drives. Cant speak for their SATA drives but I bet they are just as good.

I've had many, many drives over the years, and at least seven of them were/are western digitals.... Never a failure...

I've got on ethat's been running for 5 years, another here thats been running for 3, and another for 2.....

Every drive can fail, and every manufacturer goes through periods of where they have problems with one model or another ie; IBM, Maxtor.

My advice, buy on warranty......The Hitachi, and Seagate warranties are leading the pack right now, and that's all that really matters today. I have two Hitachis, and one seagate in my collection too.

as everyone knows, DRIVES FROM ALL MFRS FAIL.

some people have tons of paperweights from one or more companies, some people do not.

your best bet is to check storagereview.com and take a look at their reliablilty database. it is very thorough I think and Ive found it as a decent resource. they also have pretty good reviews.

and personally, i have had 3 dead maxtors. but they were all the same series (the 20, and 40 GB 7200rpm ATA series)

I also have WD 4gb desktop HD which is going on seven years old, running windows 98.

I love my WD drives. Last 3 drives I bought have all been WD's. Before them, I used primarily Seagate and IBM, but now WD all the way.
